Range Rover Issues

just to pile on since everyone seems to love ripping range rover reliability.

*spoiler* mine works, but checking the oil, thats another story.

1. No physical Dip stick

2. Process to check oil:
A. Run car until engine is hot
B. Turn Car OFF
C. Wait 10 minutes
D. Turn Car on
E. Utilize menu
F. Find vehicle information
G. click "Check oil Level"

Status says "unavailable" after process. So repeat steps A-G another 10 times this afternoon

I bought my car in December and have never once checked the oil level so its like playing russian roulette

As a backup i went to the incontrol vehicle health report and you guessed it. Doesnt mention Oil level anywhere.... coolant level, brake fluid, tire pressure, tire pressure monitoring system, fuel level all fine.... but oil level? who knows

On the positive i think its fine as there isn't a pool of oil in the garage or anything.

Is this normal?

im driving cross country on saturday and i can't get an appointment so they can physically check my oil level in time

they said they have to do all the steps to check it as i do (electronically)... they dont stick a dipstick in the oil tank to check either.... so with that in mind i was told "it can take a while"

However i will give kudos to the design team for giving me a warning every time i turn on the car that my tire pressure was low.... in the spare tire, in the trunk

Man, that sounds like a hassle. No dispstick is the unfortunate reality of the present. My BMW is the same way but luckily once it warms up I'm easily able to check the oil level.

I think it can also be checked with the right diagnostic scanner. I'm going on a long drive soon too and little things like this and my electronic water pump are on my mind.

An Autel DS708 will tell you, if you know anyone or anywhere with one. It will show up under “live data.”

Range Rover Issues

UPDATE: This is how you do it for all RR owners

Service advisor said they dont want customers checking so it usually doesnt work following the instructions in the manual . This is only after i raised hell about getting it done and they felt bad i spent all day following instructions that dont work. the 800 number, the service department, and the SA all told me "they dont want customers to know" how weird is that? so clearly its communicated widely that they dont want people to check their oil. WEIRDEST thing i have ever heard (second only to the story of the guy who called technical support, incontrol support, the service department, then a service advisor to check the oil, and the service manager was also involved)

During the conversation, the SA said "its a Range Rover" or "not on a Range Rover" or something to that effect when i asked why dont people want to know if they have enough oil as i cant be the only person to ask. I responded "thats exactly why i want to know" he didn't get the joke.

Here is how to do it which IS NOT in the manual

1. Open the hood
2. Open the driver door
3. push start button, but dont start car (ie dont step on the breaks)
5. Clear warnings (door open, hood open by clicking "OK" on each alarm)
4. hit "cancel" twice
5. Go to vehicle settings
6. check oil

Guess what, it works... no issues

Vs. What the manual states:

i love my RR. Not wanting/allowing customers to know their oil level before driving 4000 miles across the country borders on criminal though. seriously

its nowhere near service time, but IMO it would be irresponsible to drive to Montana from Houston in the middle of the summer without knowing. I could break down..... in Oklahoma or Kansas. No one even lives there. Who knows if my roadside assistance button works in the middle of a corn field in Kansas with no cell reception.

Then you are the guy from the "city" with the broken down range rover in some tiny rural town in the middle of nowhere. Thats the start to every horror movie ever made.

Well I'm very glad you were eventually able to get this out of them, Tyler. You're extremely sensible in wanting to know this, especially before a long trip.

It's a shame it took all of that effort but now it's all sorted, nonetheless.

I had no idea there are cars without dipsticks... what’s the thought behind that? It’s such a low-tech, easy solution. I can understand having the ability to check it electronically, but what’s the harm in a physical backup?

Service revenue it appears. Can’t check it then you have to take it in

Im a pretty tech savvy person. My ADT cameras and the RR are pretty much the only tech i struggle with. The RR in particular is not very intuitive as far as how to find stuff once you dig deeper than the surface every day type of stuff you use all the time. Once you figure it out it seems to be fine. I just cant seem to figure anything new out on the car without the manual and i hardly ever need a manual for anything

It’s like they know these vehicles won’t be used in the middle of nowhere when the sensor inevitably fails.

Seriously they’ve departed from the brands purpose. Range Rover Evoque sold in front wheel drive that can’t ‘rove the range.’ Others focused on road performance and Nurburgring times sold with no low range and low profile summer street tires.

they did the climbing wall (road) thing in the dealership with mine.... low profile tires and 22 inch wheels and all

wouldn't let me do it, but thats steeper terrain than even i would do when i actually do take it off road.... which i will. going to do some in Montana next week

Just to balance things, my 2014 Range Rover Sport has gone 82,000 miles without a single problem, better than any other vehicle I’ve had.

Mine has gone 2k miles no real issues.

Minor Infotainment hicuip when I had car play installed and issues checking the oil.

The oil level was fine which I suspected. Just needed the confirmation so I felt like I checked it which isn’t easy

Maybe I’m old school but I need to verify preferably physically but at a minimum electronically. I have a hard time wrapping my head around someone driving 16k miles between services and never checking the level

Do the blown Range Rover engines drink as much oil as turbos?

Im on my second RR which turns 10 years old soon. I would suggest joining rangerovers.net as they usually have all the tricks and secret menus. A back up plan would have been to go to a respectable indy and just do an oil change. Lastly, pick up a Range Rover specific OBD Scanner/clear machine like this one:
https://www.icarsoft.com/Product/s-2...oft_lr_v1.html

There will be a time when your RR will throw a gremlin code that you can reset in minutes instead of being at the mercy of the dealership. I have one in my trunk, paid for itself after the first use.

TBH its the gremlins that are going come up far more than major engine stuff it seems. There is so much tech its to be expected i suppose. I still prefer the tech vs without so its still probably worth it

the car play install was a nightmare for about 3 days. then it settled down and works great

Just to add fuel to the fire. Are you sure “not available” doesn’t mean there is “no oil....available”.

My wife’s LR4 we’ve had for almost three years with.......count them, ZERO problems. The lease is up in December and she wants to buy it. Of course, if we do, it will break the next day!

I found a pic going back 10 years now, where my friend had brand new leased Range Rover at the time. About 2 years into the lease, the truck was standing double parked running with the air condition on since it was a hot summer day. Next thing u know it’s starts smoking and catches on fire. Fire depot had to come. Car was totaled. Unsure what started the fire

curious... does it ever make sense to lease and then buy after the lease ends, financially vs just buying it to begin with? Or is the love of the car driving that? emotions vs financial. No idea. If i leased i would probably get a different car after it was up

I really do love my RR though. Part of why i just bought it initially as i would end up keeping it anyway. Would still buy it again today too
