1601 super slow after service?

Hey guys.

Just bought a 1601 from a member on watchuseek. It was said that the watch was freshly serviced but as soon as I set it, it loses about 5 minutes every 5 hours.

Drove all the way to Detroit for it from Toronto. (4.5 hour drive)

Is this something that would be a cheap and quick fix like a regulation? Or was the service most likely done incorrectly?

Would like to avoid the headache of shipping the watch back and hoping to get the $ back upon receipt.

Cheers

Easiest thing would be for a local watchmaker diagnose to problem and make decisions from there.

Very true. Original seller wants it shipped back Monday and watchmakers in my area are closed. Was hoping there was a general answer but I'm sure it would have to be looked at!

A loss like that is seldom able to be diagnosed on the Internet..

As to a "fresh service", if no proof is presented, it didn't happen.

I picked it up directly from the watchmaker. And the service is dated on the caseback.

Thanks for the reply!

Seller 'wants' it shipped back Monday? What happens if you don't? I'm tripping over red flags, get your money back and try again.

A legitimate seller would welcome a diagnosis and work with you to resolve the issue. it's just a watch. Maybe it was never serviced and he doesn't want anyone discovering all the dirt and dried oils. :)

Get out of the deal.

Did you wind the watch fully by hand?

It is remotely possible that the watch had been sitting up and they just set it and handed it to you and since it was running it was not then wound.

It may be something else but please wind the watch fully manually 30 turns clockwise and then check and see how it does.

Never even thought of it. I'll definitely try that!

If it is running like you say loses about 5 minutes every 5 hours then its not regulation. The max range of adjusting with regulation is around 130 seconds either way, possible some oil on hairspring if it has been just serviced.

It wasn't worn after service. I just wound it now and will see how it goes. It's water proof and super clean all around. The movement looks brand new. Just hope it doesn't need another full service

Yes try a full manual wind around 40 full crown turns clockwise only you cannot over-wind it.They wear as normal for around 8 hours a day set time with a reliable time source a quartz watch will do thats accurate enough.Check time once daily with same setting source write down the loss or gain over a few days if it is still way out then send it back.
