Just Inherited Vintage Men's Roles and Clueless

Hi All!
I just inherited a 2-tone men's Rolex purchased in Switzerland 40 years ago. I know nothing about this watch and I am a bit overwhelmed.

Where do I start? I would like to know what model this is and how to care for and use it. Things like: is it really completely waterproof? The former owner used to NEVER take it off, even to swim (which freaks me out to do).

I need to clean it (outside) and have it cleaned (? inside).

Can someone rip me off when I take it to be cleaned? What is is worth (not sure I am going to keep it), etc. etc.

Any starting point recommendations?

I an THRILLED to find this group. I have a very good feeling about it.

Welcome

Can you post some pics of the watch? Has it ever been serviced? Any accompanying paperwork, etc?

Welcome and pics are a must! Pics or it didn't happen is the ruling motto here.

Hi all, thank you for the welcome! Okay. Here are pics. I know it is a basic oyster Rolex. It was purchased in Switzerland in 1979, (is it possible from the "factory"?).

Does it mean anything "special" if the watch was purchased in Switzerland? Is there anything different about it?

I have no paperwork. My dad's initials were engraved on the back. He wore it swimming, which freaked me out, but it never seemed to bother the watch.

The other men's style Rolex I have seen online seem to have finer links in the bracelet than this one. Does that have anything to do with the age of the watch?

That is all I know about it. It surprised me that it is such a heavy watch for someone to wear everyday.

Thank you all, again, for the welcome and letting me post.

Are there any guides on Rolex Watches, so I can look up the meaning of the numbers (other than the number for stainless) and letters and learn more about this watch? I am good at finding "stuff" online, but I am not sure which model this is.

I don't find other men's watches with this color face and the large links...maybe that does not change the style number, maybe it idoes.

Welcome. You should post the pics in the Rolex General discussion forum. I'm not sure many of the experts spend much time in the New Members forum.

If you remove the band, you will find the reference # between the lugs at 12 o'clock and the serial # between the lugs at 6 o'clock,
The reference # provides the exact model, the serial # allows you to determine exact age.

The band you have on is a replacement oyster band. It would originally have had a jubilee bracelet (with the "finer" links).

If the band was replaced, it was replaced in Switzerland, at the "factory" where my dad bought, by the way. I know he did not replace the band after he came back to the US from his trip.

It looks genuine, but I leave it to the vintage experts to chime in. I had a similar one, but with the jubilee bracelet. I do not know when your bracelet was introduced.

I have a sub marina 5508 I could not get it serviced at rolex because of the age I had to send it to a watch restoration company in London they were the only people that would take it on they mad a superb job.
