Nature's beauties.

Dear TRF friends:

I recently had the great opportunity of witnessing again one of nature's beauties; this time my BlackBerry made it possible to semi-document this (sorry for the pics).

We arrived on site a little after 11pm, it was a dark and windy night but excitement was in the air. My companion: my trusty sub c

a few minutes or hours later; the miracle started. A big shadow emerges from the ocean and walks to the beach. They are here. Beautiful, 1.40 meter long (4.6 ft) turtles.

They dig their nests in the warm sand and lay 100-140 eggs. Up until that night, turtle guardians had noticed over 400 nests on that beach.

then cover and camouflage the nest in an amazing process that takes almost one hour; just to turn around and go back to the ocean

20-25 years from now, the newly born turtles will come back to the same beach where they were born; one of natures mysteries and beauties.

Sand. Ocean. Turtles. My sub in its favorite (and natural) environment.

It is one of those things that, when you are invited to, does not sound fun (hey, let's go to the turtle guardian's beach and sit for hours in the sand to maybe see a turtle lay eggs....), but once it happens; you are SOOOOOOO happy to be there.

I strongly suggest it. The odd thing is that most Caribbean places have turtle nesting sites which are active from July through September but tourists do not visit them!

Sweet. I worked at a turtle rehab facility in Juno Beach, FL for a summer. We did nesting surveys almost every night. Those are some very cool pics.
