Correct. As an American expat living in Egypt, it would make sense to keep the hour hand set to Cairo and the GMT set to the USA.

As an EXPII owner -- we're mountaineers and cave dwellers, and march by our drum anyway. I set my 4th hand to the time zone which makes the most sense for my business, which happens to be GMT-5. I live in GMT-8 and travel between zones frequently. As an SD owner -- I use my dive bezel to track GMT-5 too. I guess, I'm doing all wrong there as well. And heaven forbid, if I ever use the hour hand on an analog watch as a compass when I'm orienteering in the backcountry. Nope, nope...can't do any of that because none of my watches are named as such! All in good fun!

There are so many theories out there and I suppose that it would be best to subscribe to the one that works the best for you. When the GMT-Master ref.6542 was initially designed and all the subsequent models where the 24 hr hand could not be independently set, the watch was intended to be used as follows: Set the standard 12 hr hand to home time. When traveling to a different time zone you would rotate the bezel to align local time with the 24 hr hand. This was the whole reason this movement was developed so it would alleviate the problem of having to reset hands every time you entered a different time zone. This was prompted by the aviation world moving from the slower propeller age to the faster jet age and being able to cross many more time zones in a shorter amount of time. But it all comes down to whatever floats your boat.

Here is what I've found works for me, personally:
When at home, I set the 4th hand to home time, and rotate the bezel to other time zones to check time in other parts of the world. When in another time zone, I set the hour hand to local time, and use the 4th hand/24 hour bezel to keep track of home time. Very cool... S. j |
