Exp 214270 is my first Rolex and I absolutely love it.

1. I love the design: clean and versatile;
2. I love the name: I take myself as an Explorer (I am immigrant and entrepreneur in late 20s);
3. I love the style: under the radar. I am an under-the-radar person;
4. I love the accuracy: I wore it for 1 month before day-light-saving and the error was +1s in 1 month, not per day!
5. I have a few scratches, but which rolex does not?

Just a bit concerned that for such a projected "tool watch" how that fixed polished bezel holds up.
The sub is not a "tool watch" any more due to the ceramic shine.

Had a 114270 since 2004 and it's one of my favorites. No issues with the bezel.

I've only had my Explorer 39 for a little over a week, but I really can't imagine loving a watch more. I think I'm going to be a one watch guy from now on. It's so versatile.

Have had mine for 6 months now, and only one very faint scratch at 10. The interesting part is that the scratch was there when I bought it (got it pre-loved). I wear the watch when doing light construction around the house and at the desk all day, so it's pretty durable IMO. The clasp on the other hand..

Hahah not Kooky.. but a waste of range.

If you get 214270, trade the other + $ towards an Exp II 40mm or 42mm

IMO

Don't; I own both and I prefer the 114270.
Buy it if you wish, but it may end up being a costly mistake!

Having read and reread this, I echo the sentiment that the explorer is a fantastic watch. I don't wear mine as often due to the lack of a date feature. It's actually for sale. I tend to wear my seadweller more. But it looks so badass when I do wear it.

I've been dying to get mine. I just ordered a 39mm Explorer over the weekend and hopefully it gets here before the weather snows out Fedex. This is my first Rolex (and high end watch for that matter), so I can't even begin to say how excited I am.

I truly believe it's the perfect "daily" watch, good for any occasion.

It will hold up. Remember it's a tool watch. Nobody complains of scratches on a hammer. Same idea with the exp 1- I like them when they've got a bit beat up looking.

Had one but sold it off with another piece as a gold Rolex was calling my name and having 3 was getting out of hand.

I still miss the exp 1. Great watch.
BUT... I prefer the short hand, wg number version.

I've had mine since late December. The bezel and clasp have picked up some minor marks since then, but they don't bother me. They are signs of a well-loved watch to me. I bought it to wear it, after all.

I probably won't do it. I love the 36mm Explorer and I don't think I will part with it. Maybe if and when I get a big payday, I'll get the 39mm.

For me it's more that I get tempted now and then but I won't part with my 114270 or own two Explorers.

Thanks! We're on like mind on the 36mm. It's beautiful and badass. I'm not going to trade it in for the 39mm. It's just that now and then I have a bit of a wandering eye. :-)

EXACTLY!! A sapphire crystal is one thing, since a bunch of scratches on the crystal may impede reading the time, but I don't understand the obsession to keep the steel on a tool watch scratch free.

Four years and counting on my 214270. Almost daily wear and very minor scratches on the bezel. Need to look really hard to see them.

Explorer is a Classic !
Early 90s I have worn it for 5 years (36 mm with Cal. 3000).
Hard to get at that time, very popular especially in Hong Kong.

Scratches ? Only the first scratches are annoying.
Then a steel watch is getting better and better.
A personal touch 😊
Never polish a steel Rolex (but that is my opinion).

Just picked up a 114270 and couldn't be happier. Classic. Versatile. And perfectly understated IMHO.

Looks great on your wrist. This is next on my list-- just agonizing (ok, maybe a bit strong) over the 36mm v the 39mm. At this point the 114270 is winning as I think it would be a better contrast to the 40mm Sub.

I've had the opportunity to wear my brother's 114270, and 36 mm felt way too small for me... I've got a 7-1/2" wrist, and have been wearing a 40 mm watch for 18 yrs... I feel confident that if I ever get around to trying on the 39 mm Explorer, it will be difficult to walk away from it w/ out either buying it or trading in my Daytona.

To me, the dial size makes all the difference, which is why the 36mm Explorer/DJ reads similarly to 16610 on the wrist. The dial sizes are about the same, and the difference is really just in the bezel area.

In the past, I've owned a 36mm DJ, a 16610, a 16570 and a first generation Omega Aqua terra, and, despite being technically smaller than the Sub, my 39mm Aqua Terra reads larger on the wrist, because it's got a noticeably larger dial and smaller bezel.

I had been going back and forth on the same thing. I have an IWC Mark XVI that comes in at 39mm, which I love, and that made me nervous about the size of the 36mm Explorer. Net, net, very happy with how the 36mm looks on the wrist and have no issues with the size. Again, just love the classic look.

No need to worry. The Explorer is all that Mick says it is. If you like it, buy it when you can. It won't disappoint. I bought the 39mm version in 2011. It was my fourth Rolex (GMT Master II "Coke", Submariner Date and Explorer II, white dial 40mm, were the first three). It holds its own with them all.
