April Fool: 5712G or 5164

Hi all

First of all thanks to all of you who replied to my thread with regards to choosing between a 5712 and a 5164. Really helpful comments.

I got a msg from my AD about a week ago telling me that I had been allocated a 5712G that was to arrive on April 1.

I still hadn't decided between the 5712G and the 5164. I told my AD contact I was probably leaning towards the 5164 however I didn't want to miss the opportunity to see the Nautilus in the flesh so in I go to check it out.

I'm the first customer in the door. I look at the 5712G from every angle for quite a while. It's a beautiful piece but it just wasn't singing to me... I wanted to look cool like Paul McCartney and George Soros! 😉 So I tell the AD that I just can't do it and will wait for the 5164. He asks me if I'm sure and I say yes.

He signals to his co-worker and within 30 seconds out she comes with a double sealed 5164! He says surprise! April Fools!

Wasn't sure if I was annoyed or ecstatic or both. Probably both! Anyway it was great to see both pieces together and I got to really see which one I preferred...

Didn't take me too long though... went with the gut and pulled the trigger on the 5164. What a great piece. So comfortable and easy to wear. Rubber strap has been left a little loose for now and will see how we go in the next few days/couple weeks.

Great to be a part of the Patek club now 😊

Wow great choice! Incredible piece. In my opinion the 5712 dial is a little to busy for the case size. Which is why I prefer the 5711.

Agreed. I wonder at what point or whether they would they tell the OP about the 5164 had he decided to buy the harder to sell 5712G.

This is no april fools joke.

Thanks all for the congratulatory messages... still in the honeymoon phase and adoring the 5164.

Agree, maybe a bit shady. I think maybe they wanted to see if I would buy the more expensive piece perhaps? It was clearly orchestrated.

I was initially not impressed but at the end of the day they offered the 5164 to me anyway...I've waited so long and I was just happy to get it at the end of the day.

The whole world of Patek ADs in fact seems strange to me. I'm told that there are long queues for aquanaut and nautilus however occasionally you'll walk into an AD and they will have an in demand piece available for you to buy right there and then.

I also get different treatment from different ADs belonging to the same watch group. There is no clarity on where you are in or indeed if you're in a queue and it all depends on relationship.

Congrats on the 5164! I just purchased one as my first Patek a few weeks ago. I feel like the AD does what they need to hit quotas. I was able to a substantial discount on the last day of the month.

Yeah Red Gold is hot... I'm thinking either 5712R or 5712/1A as the next purchase. Not a huge fan of bracelets right now but perhaps this will change in the near future
