Can both white 5711 and blue 5712 co-exist in a collection?

Hi,

This is my first post on the forum. 5711 has always been a grail watch for me. Few months ago, I got on the waitlist for both the blue and white dials with the option to get either one by end of the year. My initial preference was for blue dial and white dial was just a backup. However, I recently handled both blue dial 5712 and white dial 5711. Compared to the mostly black/greyish dial of the 5712, the white dial 5711 really stood out. I was absolutely smitten by the watch. Now, I have almost made-up my mind that I will get the white dial 5711.

For some reason, although I was a little underwhelmed with the lack of blue on the 5712, I really liked the watch. There is some magic in the non-symmetry of the functions on the dial. My questions is whether a white dial 5711 and the blue dial 5712 co-exist or are very similar? The 5712 purchase, if it happens, is a few years away but wanted to see what everyone thought about it.

Plus, for some reason, I don't like the white dial on the 5726. I feel it gets lost under the complications. Not a fan of the grey dial either. I feel for annual calendar, the other references such as 5146 and 5396 are more desirable. So, 5726 is not a choice at this point.

Thank you everyone for your feedback.

The 12 doesn't lack blue, it is just very chameleon like, and under some lightings will appear grey or silver while on others will be blue, it varies a lot. To answer your question of course they can, I have a 11 and the 12, and am very happy to have both, so a white dial will go fine with the blue dial, and you will be surprised how blue it can be at times...

Too similar in my opinion and there are too many other interesting watches out there.

I am in the minority. Had the blue and whilst nice wasn't the blue I was hoping for (since sorted that out!) and now chosen the white dial which I think is fantastic and underrated.

About the grey color you were talking about see this thread, shows the same watch when dial is grey and when dial is blue. About what Karl said of course the top is the 5711p blue, or the 5980-1AR blue, but the first one is a huge premium, and the second looses the thinness of the 11-12

And then some

If you love Nauts, esp more than Aquas, they are a fine pair, I'd rather have the 5712 and 5164 myself.

I'd go 5711 white and something completely different, like a chrono (Rolex or PP), etc.

If you have a large collection, sure. If less than 10 I'd probably not pair them

Well if it's saying what we prefer most as a pair, mine which is my favorite is 5712 and 5167R, also have 5711 but if I had to get rid of one of these the 5711 would go, but very happy to have them as well as the 2 others

Pairing two Nauts in a collection? Depends on your collecting topic... For me probably not. But I don't collect :-)

personally i think is too redundant; but my goal is to have 3 or 4 nice watches. I guess if you want a own 12 and love them that much there is nothing wrong with that

Some people collect watches that are similar and others collect watches that are very different. It is not unusual for some people here on TRF to own a Rolex Sub, GMT and SD. Likewise, I don't think it is unusual to want to own both the 5711 and 5712. With the different dial colors, you will have some options in matching the watch with the rest of your attire.

Ultimately you have to be happy with your watches and so my suggestion is to purchase the watches that you want.

Truly a personal call.

For me, I'd rather get a bit more brand/design diversity. An AP or Lange would be my next target, if I was in your shoes.

A bit too similar for me, but they can definitely coexist. I guess it depends on how much you like the general design, and how large your collection is

There is no wrong answer here. It depends on your taste. I hv a 5712 and my preference to hv a white 5711 but if I come across with a blue 5711, I would pair it with too. All these watches are very liquid, I suggest you buy it if u have the option and if u do not like, you can sell it probably at no loss.

I have the blue, which is my preference but I wouldn't add the white. Maybe get something else. A 5980?

Some people collect XXXX subs and are excited, because they got a new one which has a new or different font, so for me a 5711 and a 5712 which have totally different dials are for me totally different, even more so if the 5711 is white

Thank you all for your feedback. As I said, a potential 5712 purchase is a few years away. But it was still fun to see what everyone thought about the topic.

As a background to my collection, I have in the last 1 year or so consolidated my watch collection. As far as the high-end tier is concerned, I have a Royal Oak 15450 (silver dial) and a GO PanoMaticLunar (blue dial on bracelet). I will be adding a Patek 5711 (white dial) later this year. My next target is a Royal Oak 15202 in 1-2 years if the watch fits on my flat 6.5 inch wrist. I feel both 15450 and 15202 are different enough to co-exist in the collection.

Going forward, I have kept a self-imposed limit of $25K on potential high-end tier watch purchases till my kids land in college in 15-16 years. Maybe a Patek annual calendar at that time :). I will be looking to build my high-end tier collection by adding a watch every 2-4 years with the limited finances that I have. I am looking to pass on these watches to my kids. So a lot of thought has to go into making a purchase because I don't want to flip them later.

With that being said, I will also look at 5167 when the time comes. I recently handled that watch at an AD. It is much better in person but somehow I couldn't justify the price tag. I understand that the watch holds the value in secondary market but its not about the resale. Patek 5711 or a Royal Oak 15202 seemed to justify the price to me when I handled those two watches, the build qualify and everything. Not the 5167, maybe I will appreciate the watch more in coming years.

Thank you all for your feedback. I look forward to receiving my white 5711 later this year. Will share the pictures here :)

Between those two, go with the blue 5712

Too similar to have both in the collection, IMO.

Yes, those two would make a good Nautilus combo...very different colors and dials. Would I? Probably not since it is a lot of money but if I was to have two, that'd be a duo I'd see me owning.

If you are fine with 15450 and 15202 than both nauts are a nonbrainer

if this was my money, i go for 1 5711 and 1 calatrava.

then i won't be able to stop thinking if i should pool the money into something more expensive like a 5170.

That is an interesting discussion because I am facing same problem, recently I decided that I will only collect pateks and rolexes (with few exceptions such fp journe chronometre blue and AP ROO). Since then I feel my collection is having big overlap but in a good way to my taste. I personally like the nautilus line very much and I think having 2-3 nautilus models is OK. Initially I wanted the blue 5711 but when I saw the 5712 in person I fell in love and got the white gold with grey dial 5712. So I am now deliberating buying white or blue 5711. I feel the white will be distant enough from the 5712 but I like the blue more.

I have my name on both 5711s in few ads and until the wait is over (few years) I may go for 5164 aquanaut.

I know few people may criticise the overlap in the collection but honestly I tried several other brands and concluded that only patek and rolex satisfy me most. Also I think they are the safest investment.

Note: I am not a fan of calatrava so I just go for nautilus and aquanaut in the current patek line.
