5711p vs 5711a
For those that have or have owned both, is the 5711p that much better than the 5711a? Is it worth the 4x price? Would you do it again?

A client of mine has the pre anniversary 5711p and I've put it on my wrist, it's stunning. If you've got the cash, like the 5711 and prefer understated this then why wouldn't you?

I like the feel of platinum, and I don't care that 99.9% of the population will think it is SS. But your view may vary and I totally understand that.

If it would be the one without diamonds I would do it.
If not I would keep the 5711a. |

I think had I had the cash and opportunity to get the original, ultra low production 5711P I would have gotten it, at such a low production you pay the exclusivity, did hesitate about the 40th, but wasn't ready to pay 5 times the price I paid my 5711 for it, 700 isn't a huge production but isn't small numbers as the original either.
Now if ever one day they would do a 5712P, then I would really have to have it, but then again it's my favorite watch. All is a question of money and perspective, were I much richer I would have gotten the 40th, but for that kind of cash I preferred getting a Voutilainen as I feel it is more special to me being one of a kind, had it costed 70k I was getting one for sure, just can't justify 5 times the price, for a little more you have a 5270. Is it much cooler than the SS? Of course, 5 times cooler? I would think not, but really depends on you. |

It's def the anniversary for 4 times the price of the 5711/1A. If he found an OG 5711P for that price it would be a steal no? I'm seriously asking as I don't know the market.

There is an original one unworn for sale on chrono24, but price on request and I expect it to be over 200k, way over...
Yeah Tom, when you see that the 40th sell for 160-200k on chrono24, at least are priced like that, not sure they really sell at those prices, the original for 100k would be a steal, hell at that price even I would get it, seeing for how much the 40th ones go for, I think the OG must be around 250-300, maybe even 400, it was reserved at one point but now back on sale, I guess they are thinking that it's so rare why not try a huge sum, maybe some super rich guy will get it. |

On the other hand, the 5711/1A is probably the single most discussed watch reference here on TRF. IMO, it is probably the single most produced men's watch from Patek Philippe. I would estimate that they produce 2000-3000 5711/1As a year and since they have produced it for 10 years, there are 24,000 to 36,000 pieces out there. For a Patek watch, it is reasonably priced at $25K USD and it works well as a daily wearer. As for the 5711/1P, we know they produced 700 of the LE version for the 40th Anniversary and possible 50 or so for the non-LE version. The LE was priced about 10% higher than the non-LE version IIRC. If you are not considering these watches as investments, I think the 5711/1A is a relative bargain for a watch that you can wear every day. For the 5711/1P, there are some who look at it as an investment piece and that is quite understandable. I doubt anyone will wear one as a daily watch like they would with a 5711/1A. So although we all say that we shouldn't buy watches as investments, I would say if you are looking at a watch as an investment or you like the exclusivity factor, the 5711/1P would fit the bill. However if you feel more comfortable investing in the stock/bond/RE market and want to purchase a practical watch you can wear daily, then the 5711/1A would be a great versatile watch. I don't own either of the 5711/1A or the 5711/1P, so my opinion is probably quite different from those who own one or the other. However I was offered the 5711/1P 40th Anniversary, so I did briefly consider purchasing the watch. |

I remember trying to get the original 5711/1P a few years ago. I visited all three Salons and also inquired at several non-Salon ADs. Most ADs looked at me as if I were crazy as they had never heard of the piece. It often takes some luck to get a low production or LE watch. When the 40th Anniversary Edition came out with 700 pieces, its appeal was quickly lost as it was no longer a "rare" watch. |

Well let's say that making 700 means it's not a super exclusive watch anymore, if you love it and can afford it you understand it's special, but looses a lot of it's exclusivity IMO.
Really waiting to see what the premium will be in 2-3 years on the 40th, I am saving myself for the 50th, either LE or new piece, 50 years is a special number, might sell a flat or two the year before to be ready |

Can't answer the exact question as I haven't owned a 5711/1A, but I can say the P is a very special piece and stunning to wear. I would certainly do it again.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm kicking myself for not buying an OG a few years ago at $70k.

I felt the OG 5711P was rather magical when I tried it on and I'd go for either P version at 3 times the price of the 5711A, any more and I'd rather look at a 5270 for my blue and white PM.

The market on bracelet Nautilus is on the high side right now since it's the hottest watch in pop culture. All the jewelers are buying up the ones on the used market. Every athlete/Kardashian/DJ/drug dealer is trying to snatch one up, unfortunately half of them are being iced out
Give it time Mike and it will cool down. If anything now is the best time to sell the 5711A if your over it. The market is VERY SOFT on GC Patek watches. Many pieces are going for 50% off on the secondary market. In a few years people will be kicking themselves for not picking them up. If your looking to get some money in the bank pieces go this route. |

I had both. One remains. Nothing to do about LE! If you wanted a platinum 5711 the only way to get one was through the anniversary pieces. Whether you like them or not is personal but I bet a few vociferous vocalists are eating their words now...it's simply gorgeous...diamonds and tombstone. Picture just taken. Is a 5146P worth 50% more than a G?

The thread does raise an interesting question. Do we actually buy watches because they are LE and thus attract a brag factor or buy them cause we want them. It's like saying I wouldn't want a 5131 if it was t scarce...sometimes we convince ourselves we like something because it's hard to get! I almost made that mistake with 5650g

I don't own a 5711A but I have to say I love my 5711P. The watch is discrete to wear, but you feel the heft and wrist presence. The dial is mesmerizing, and a true joy. It is one awesome watch to wear. You just feel you are wearing a special watch. Oh, it was my first Nautilus by the way....
In the context of Patek, a limited of 700 is a very very low production and percentage wise lower then a 100 or 200 limited edition of A.Lange & Söhne that do a limited run averagely 3 to 4 watches a year. |
