Get Ye not to Venice.

Chaps

I have been in Venice all day walking the streets as the wife indulges herself in the usual retail therapy.

It is a lovely place, boats everywhere, good restaurants serving good food at good prices which was a pleasant surprise.

This by the way for those of you who do not know me, this is a pic this afternoon of me and the wife taking a gondola ride.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxgjpMzFlSc

Unfortunately the bad news, I have not seen one Rolex, other than my own, either on someones wrist or in a shop. It seems to be every make but Rolex in Venice.

Regards

Mick

My wife had us walk over like 500 bridges. She went to college for 6 months there so has romanticized it. I thought it was okay but I prefer Paris.

Nice shirt.

Too much water in Venice to safely wear a Rolex.

I always thought the first line of that song was "Chaps one cornetto," now it makes perfect sense.

Venice is a great city. I spent some time there bothering all the mask makers trying to find some original Agony and Ecstasy masks, the unpainted ones, not the gaudy things they sell to tourists.

We finally got a pair after exhausting all of my Italian and Spanish (which to be honest, didn't take long)

Bas

I took your advice and went along to San Marco and sure enough there are dozens of high end watch shops including two selling Rolex.

They both had plenty on display and I actually saw a SD43 in the flesh and yes this one is a winner. It looks better than the pics and the bracelet is something special.

Conclusion - Venice is a great place for tourists and a great place for Rolex fans plus any other make you can think of. It's better than London and I never thought I would ever say that.

Many thanks for the tip.

Regards

Mick

Is that the view from St Mark's Campanile?

I never got to go up, as it was being restored when I was there.

Was in Venice for first time last week -

Although there is some 'cool ' to the canals / city etc...overall I was very disenchanted.

Tourists are EVERYWHERE, by the boatload (literally). To me 'Venice' almost screams like a VEGAS attraction or another form of DISNEYLAND. Everything is FOR and in SUPPORT of the tourist now. I felt like I got the point after 3 bridges, and one hour or walking around.

I feel like the 'cool' of Venice was there back hundreds of years ago...1600s? 1800s? That's when I really would have wanted to check it out.

Now its just a giant tourist trap.

Go in winter. No cruise ships, no tourists, the canals don't stink, no queues, you get to see everything

Yes it is. I've been to Venice a few times but have only been up the Campanile once. It's worth doing but the crush of people is dreadful.

As for the crowds in Venice itself walk off the main thouroughfares even in the height of summer and it's easy to find quiet local bars and restaurants devoid of most tourists. I've always found winter bloody cold there

And the hotels and flights are cheaper. I've had St Marks Sq almost to myself on many of my pre-dawn strolls with the wife. Sunrise is beautiful there

X2 - Murano blown glass and glass art is beautiful. Easy to get there by Vaporetto water taxi.
