Trip planning for 50th >>>
The wife and are are knee deep into planning our trip
I'm turning 50 in June and wanted to celebrate in style, so where better than our favourite destination - Italy Hoping my foot makes a full recovery in time for this, however it's not looking so good at the moment. I have until September so we're hoping for the best. We've both been many times, but oddly never to the south. We are staying in Sorrento and Positano and will be exploring the area for 2 weeks. Suggestions are welcomed! |

It's a great area. You must go to Pompeii.

Very Happy upcoming Birthday :-)
Ravello has a special place in my heart, definitely recommend to visit and enjoy. Dinner at Torre Normanna in Maiori was lovely. I would certainly dedicate one day to Pompei and Vesuvio. Boat trip to Anacapri and Capri was fun, we stopped to explore Blue Grotto...so many other beautiful places to see... Have a wonderful time :-) |

Try the Limoncello too!
Also, a Great Day Trip would be to go to Cinque Terre and hike (if foot is better) toward Portofino and stay the night in Portofino. It is approximately a 3 hour train ride to Cinque Terre from Sorrento. Well worth the day of two from your home base. IMHO You can also just make stops to each little town via train and check them out too.

We're happy with this artist (Andrea Patrisi) - I think he's affiliated with several galleries down there.

We stayed in the Cinque Terre in 2014. Monterosso was the town (I believe it was the most northerly one). Such a beautiful area |

Brian, big milestone! I am a few years away, but not long after. Being Italian, and marrying an Italian and bringing her to canada, I travel there often. The amalfi coast is incredible and you will definetly be impressed. But, if your time allows you to travel a little more south, this is where the jewel of Italy is. The beaches, the food and the southern hospitality is one that cannot be matched. Specifically, check out the resort town of Tropea, in the region of Calabria, which is where my family and wife is from. Many resorts to choose from. I was there last summer. Then if you can get to Sicily, which from the Calabria region, is a short boat ride, the resort town of Taormina. These two resort towns are where the Italians from Italy go to. The amalfi coast is more of tourist hub from the world travelers. Don't get me wrong, you will love it, but going further south is impressive. Whatever you decide, you will love it.

We've booked Positano and Sorrento but nothing is cast in stone and we could make changes. You've really got me thinking here (I don't like tourist traps per se, but not knowing much about the area we thought Sorrento would be a good place to day trip from). I will discuss with my wife and see if she's receptive to some of your suggestions here as they sound fantastic. We are always looking for authentic experiences. No Problem, I am also speaking from experience, as when we got married in Italy, we did six days in the amalfi coast area, Capri, Positano and Sorrento. I thought that was more than enough time for us, I got tired of paying 16euros for two cappucinos....there is only so much to do there as these are small towns with cruise ships and tourists bus full coming in by the hour and the hustling from restaurant and vendors was in full tilt. If you are beach people, then find a hotel that has beach access or their own private beach, otherwise you are left to find a space on a public beach which is nearly impossible and the public beach is always located on the least desirable stretch of shoreline, meaning, where the fishermen come in, leaving garbage and the stench of gas and petrol in the water. The one thing that we did which I will always remember and cherish, was the tour of the Limoncello factories, this is a tasting tour which is about four hours, being that the region of Amalfi produces lemons, Limoncello is mostly produced there, so this tour brings you to little storefronts of the Limoncello producers that you get to sample and taste, let me tell you, after a while, your half in the bag....good thing, because that certainly helped me digest the 16euros caps!!
