Beat up watches

Maybe I’m maturing.

Maybe not.

But my watch tastes are surely evolving. And as a guy that is used to flipping when he gets bored, now more than anything, I want my watches to get beat up.

Don’t get me wrong. I’ll not purposely work them too hard. But I’m noticing my current daily accumulate “character” and I love it.

Not much more to add on top of that. Thanks for reading.

I agree. I’d rather my watch have a story to tell than look pristine and unworn.

Nooooooooooooo!

You're becoming a tool watch guy. Next thing you know you'll be driving sports cars and wearing Canali jackets.

I understand the appeal of owning watches and other items that age gracefully with wear and tear. I am a big believer in the right tool for the right job and think most watches will age gracefully given the time.

Agreed Seth, I find myself feeling that way about watches as well as other things, let the “newness” wear off and make them yours.

I’m having my 116718 serviced at RSC right now.
I asked that NO polishing/ refinishing be done.
Because:
a. Every little scratch is mine, all mine, Baby!!!!
b. It will get these tiny scratches again. Ah, the joys of YG

I must admit, I like my watches to be as perfect as possible for as long as possible. This "watch has character" just doesn't do it for me I'm afraid, I see a scratched watch.

Okay, okay, if one is on operations and on the very unlikely occasion a bullet is deflected by ones watch or bracelet past ones head, thats character and has a story to tell. On the other hand, I doubt that my grand children will look wide eyed, years after my demise as my son, through bated breath, tell them the story of how "this scratch" was gained when Grand dad banged his watch against the door handle while squeezing past the tea lady when going into the office one day.

If people want to keep their scratches, thats fine, but, my opinion is that they are not characterful. And that is all it is, my opinion, I'm fine with others opinion if it differs.

I think newness is different, my watch isn't new, has some scratches that are consistent with 18 moths worth of use, that doesn't bother me.

Yeah man. I just think it’s charming to have “experience “.

It’s hard to explain.

But I recently checked out a colleagues 18 year old VC overseas and I felt true respect. I was totally impressed and loved that he just USES his watch.

Made me realize that I’d love to look back at my current watches 18 years from now and smile at the use/memories.

I'm the same way but it has to be mine. If I buy a watch that isn't new I'll have it serviced to get it as close to new looking as possible so that I know that all the "character" added was by me.

It’s the first noticeable scratch on a brand new watch that not only hurts the most, but stands out like a beacon on the remaining perfectly polished or brushed finishes. After it is joined with additional imperfections, they blend into a perfect imperfection of a watch well loved.

Agree with that.

I prefer my watches new.

Somehow even used watches from David come literally perfect. But I still try and go new whenever possible.

I agree there! I actually don’t mind the small scratches on my watches any more.. maybe somehow it lets me know it’s mine and mine only although a big dent or scratch will still bug the crap out of me

I agree. I was like that with my first which I wore 24/7 for 10 years. After that I’ve been careful and not so care free. This is why I’m considering a 214270 and calling it quits

I love the character that’s on my BLNR. I recently made a change from office job to being a culinary student and the watch gets banged a lot. Seeing more character as the course goes and I love it!

I like my watches to show a bit of character. I’m careful but the typical hairline scratches and such make it mine. I’m careful but don’t get wound up over little s$&t. Life’s too short.

I would like to have my cake and eat it too, which is to say that I would like to wear them and keep them pristine.

Having learned through sad experience that such is impossible, I have learned to live with the inevitable signs of wear.

There are no safe-queens for me.

Wear em’ Like ya stole em’
I bought tough watches that I can wear nonstop, look great, and take a beating. May as well put them to the task. Hell, you’ve seen my sub

I've never worried about it. That is why I buy rolex and tudor. With other watches you may have to worry.

I think a degree of balance is good. Don’t be afraid to wear it, but don’t go out on a limb to risk damage either. After all it’s the aesthetics as much as anything else which matter.

If you plan on keeping a watch polishing is a futile excercise IMO. I imagine the hot flipped watches gets a polishing every time they pass a grey dealer.

A Rolex with some love marks looks great. An AP or a Patek, not so much.

I like how my watches are wearing. They are not babied and show the wear my sometimes stupid use puts on them, including scrapes with the side of the pool because sometimes I'm too lazy to do a flip-turn. This wear is my wear, it fits me and my watches like the wear I put on my boots and shoes. When it's time, my watches will be serviced, "re-soled" if you will, and I'll start all over again, if I'm lucky.
