5167 on rubber. Had a 15202 and still prefer the Aquanaut

I had the same dilemma 1 year ago. I bought 5167a with the rubber strap. One concern I had about 15400 was that the bracelet may get scratched more easily. I have been wearing 5167 pretty much every day and am very happy with it. Super light, has a presence despite the slim profile. I had it on a leather strap for a while and it worked pretty well too.

My thoughts???
I have owned both watches. I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to do so. The 15400 was one of the most beautiful watches I have ever seen. In hindsight it was also the biggest piece of junk I have ever worn and it fit like a dinner plate on my 7 3/4 inch wrist. I purchased the watch for my Birthday in October of 2014 from an AD in NYC. Between then and April 2016 it went back to Clearwater 4 times for the following repairs. 1. Out of the box it was running 45 seconds a day fast and a clasp screw fell out. 2. Three trips to examine the problem. A new mainspring was installed on the 4th trip. 3. The clasp broke in April 2016. Sent back to Clearwater for repair. I lost all confidence in the watch and traded it on a used PP 5296G. But, as I have written I am a bracelet guy so when a mint 5167 on a bracelet showed up at Govberg, I traded it as I felt it would be a better every day watch for me as opposed to a Calatrava. By comparison, the aquanaut wears like a feather and does not overpower my wrist the way the RO did. It has a "softer" design then the industrial looking RO. I could never get used to the RO look. I get and appreciate that it is a ground breaking classic but it is a little to modernistic for my taste. I love the lower profile of the aquanaut case and the fact that it calls less attention to itself then the RO. As far as rubber vs bracelet. I don't get the dislike of the PP bracelet on this forum. it's distinctive and even more comfortable then the RO as it just drapes around the wrist. I think frankly it dresses up the watch more. It's also 0- +1 a day depending on how it is worn and the resting position overnight.... Your mileage may very on some of these opinions.... I think the 5167 is a better watch in every sense of the word. Not as blingy as the 15400 but for me at least, more of a satisfying choice. |

Hmmm close call. There are already many threads discussing this, the Nautilus is clearly the better choice from wherever you want to look at it. But there's something about the Aquanaut that I can't put into words. I think for me, the Aquanaut has a slight edge over the Nautilus, it's just too cool. I mean, it's a Patek but its not trying to be flashy or fancy, it's confident enough to wear rubber and doesn't give a sh*t if other watches know that he is a Patek. I don't know if it makes sense. Did I just project myself on a watch? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro |

Thanks Mikegp and NoVaSubowner for your frank views. I aspire to a Royal Oak, Aquanaut or Nautilus. It is very helpful to hear from owners and former owners. It is also helpful to see watches in person and try them on as opposed to looking at them on the internet. But with the Nautilus, it may be hard to find one to try on.

Paul McCartney wears an aquanaut with a suit, but he also wears trainers with his suit to complete the look

If it weren't for the excessively noisy rotor I would say Patek.

I wear my Aquanaut regularly with a suit and have never felt it was inappropriate. |

Sorry Jon, my reply was a little tongue in cheek. I actually think the aquanaut looks fine with a suit. Not convinced by the trainers though....

I would go with the 15400. Just my personal opinion, but the finishing on the Royal Oak is superior to the Nautilus and definitely the Aquanaut. If resale value doesn't concern you, I would definitely pick the AP, and pocket that 5K savings. More bang for your buck IMO.

Aquanaut. If you go AP, find a 15300 or 15202

I have both watches but have been wearing my 5167 since I purchased it last week. As others have stated, the 5167 on tropical rubber strap is super light and very comfortable. I wear the 5167 to the gym and even to sleep. It's a lot more accurate than the 15400. Sure the 324 S has a noisy rotor but it doesn't bother me. The 5167 lume is bright and readable even in pitch black darkness, 15400 the lume sucks, no doubt about that. But the 15400 bracelet is a work of art I will say that and it has the IT factor in regards to wrist presence. Very flashy. The Aquanaut is subdued and stealthy. If I had to do it all over again I would have just bought the 5167, but with my 5711 coming early 2018 I would most likely dump my 15400 in favor of two Caliber 324S. 5167 as a daily and 5711 for work and night out on the town.

AP for the look and 5167 for comfort. Side by side Patek can look a bit underwhelming. If this is what you are after go for it.
I've tried the aquanaut at the AD and didn't feel a thing. 5711 is a different story though....might be worth saving up.. |

The 5167 is very casual and discreete, but I would tend to prefer the AP, but on blue dial, for the Aqua of course on strap not bracelet, of course my favorite Aqua is in RG, they are amazing in real and have a wow factor lacking the SS IMO, but the SS is great as an everyday watch
