Correct, you will have to change to the original configuration and cannot keep the insert that was on the watch, even if it is pristine.

My advice if you have switched it or don't even know the original configuration, take it off before you send it in.

That was not my recent experience, but I suppose policies may have changed in the last couple of weeks. I dropped off my 16710 for service at local AD in mid September and it was sent to RSC for service. The watch came with a coke bezel originally but I have a pepsi on it currently. I purchased the pepsi bezel from the local AD a couple years ago. In any event, no issues with the changed bezel. RSC didn't try and confiscate the pepsi bezel during service.
