1938P Minute Repeater

https://www.patek.com/en/company/new...-ref-1938p-001

As much as Philippe Stern is a legendary figure of Patek, having to stare at his face each time I look at the watch is a bit too much, no?

I thought the same. Perhaps some will like looking at another’s face, to each their own

Looks great but would have been way better without PS’ face staring at you every time you look at your watch.

I love it. Creating such a detailed motif in enamel couldn't have been easy. I have to imagine the 30 lucky ducks who were allocated have a decades-long personal relationship with the Sterns... hardly looking at a stranger's face. Just my opinion!

I think they did a great job and it's very tasteful but also would have preferred that the face is on the back of the offcier case back or even on the inside of it. It's produced in such a small number and it will go to people with so many watches, I think it's a great collectors item.

Yes. I will never be even close to being in the queue to acquire the fuzz from the cloth used to polish this watch, but the face on the dial is--dare I say--tacky.

It’s foolishness and the type of stuff, if continued, that I think ultimately makes the Brand a self centered family trinket for the odd rich and less serious timepieces for people genuinely interested in horological excellence.

If you are paying that price I wonder if you can request a dial without the face. It’s just weird.

x2...

I get the homage to the legend (and dad) but to put his face on the dial like that.. was very surprised to see Patek release something like this given their more understated subtle elegant approach I've admired

I could not agree more. What other brand does this type of stuff. The most troubling thing to me, is what I view as a trend to less serious watches as you point out. Putting the current fad of colorful dials on mega highly complicated watches that should be appreciated through the ages? I would much prefer the company focus on rare and exotic dial applications used from centuries in haute horology. Urban Jurgensen did this with their dials. Remember their grenage dials as an example.

Hopefully it’ll go down as an aberrational ill-advised moment of obscene self-congratulations and indulgence (to which, to be clear, they are totally entitled, just quietly, and not on the face of a watch), and we’ll never speak of it again. Otherwise, we’ll see honorary watches to grandchildren, wives, etc., and I guess we’ll all be moving on to ALS.

Ridiculous dials are the craze. Puzzle daydate, Spider-Man offshore, now this from Patek.

Said Omega: “who’s laughing at snoopy now.”

This was supposedly all sold to friends and families. So I guess they will not mind the dial.

Maybe this model is intended in part as a presentation towards aristocratic clients, to send the message that Patek is willing to paint the client's (or his/her family's) face on the dail as a unique piece, like in historic pendant watches.

There are certain individuals (of which I am not one) who have a longstanding friendship with PS, love of the brand, and seemingly infinite funds. This is for them and fits in as their second/third/fourth etc minute repeater. Good for them and happy birthday to Mr Stern. Kudos to TS for doing what makes them happy :)

I have several life long friends, there are zero of them I want on my watch. Thank you.
