Fading on matte dial
Hi,
Have come across this ‘84 matte dial and I’m curious to know what is causing the fading between the plots as shown in the image? Anyone seen this before? |

Could it simply be reflection from the lighting setup? It's not visible in the head-on photo under the same listing.
To be absolutely sure perhaps ask for a close-up photo under natural light? |

I looked at that listing ID and believe those are photoshop artifacts. Sometimes happens when trying to improve the contrast and sharpness in the original images.
Note how the “fading” changes in shots at different angles. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Just looks like the photo to me. It is always tough on the angle shots to get perfect dial coloring.

I disagree. HQ has been using the same lighting set-up since Jesse (who used to do the ones with the great background) left. I looked a lot of other GMTs from around those years, and this one is totally unique. No other show any sort of lighting effect. Additionally, I seem to recall a thread on here where this sort of thing was pointed out.

The "fading" is from the lighting - my guess is that it is from a lighting umbrella.

I looked at other photos and don't see these pale spots on other matte dials on the website. The spots, however are symmetric, so could be from the lighting. I will add that if I was preparing this for sale I would retake the photos and not post these.

I’ve also seen this on other matte dial photos where the spots are not symmetrical which has made me question whether these are water marks or some kind of residue left on the dial perhaps from a service?

I believe mounting the hands can scratch them, imagine how many times some of the older hands have been handled. I also believe age/corrosion is an issue. I would like to learn more about how/why hands age like they do. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |
