Rolex GMT-Master 1675 from 1971

Hello all,

I am considering buying a 1675 from a private seller.
The watch is from 1971 according to the initial purchase invoice and serial number.
I was actually going to post some photos and ask the experts here if they would like to take a quick look. Unfortunately it doesn't work technically, can't get the format right.
Any of you feel like taking a look at the photos via PM?

I would be very grateful.

Kind regards

Alex

You have 10 posts, so you can host full size photos on a hosting site like Imgur, then include BBCode links in your post. To post photos directly, the files need to be quite small, which wouldn't be ideal anyway. You would have the same issue by PM, as far as I know.

I just got off the phone with the current owner. He doesn't want photos in the public forum. I am very sorry, when I buy the watch, I post pictures.

Kind regards from Germany

I would be a bit worried if a seller don't want pictures in a forum. Could be a tell that not all is as I should be.

Thank you for your tips. I live in Germany. The gentleman is a little older and I know him. I don't think he really wants to hide anything.
I will have the watch looked through next week at our rolex dealer.

Initial post asked for opinions... implying you have a degree of uncertainty, nothing wrong with this, in fact very wise and completely normal. Posting pics after purchase under these circumstances, hoping for validation, is not.

Your AD will know close to naught about vintage.

Absolutely. For example, they will probably not be able to tell you reliably whether the parts are original or service replacements, which would have an enormous influence on value. However, it's the OP's choice.

OP, you can post images <1250x1250, maybe it will give out some clues.

Apparently the seller doesn't want photos to be posted online. But perhaps after the OP purchases the watch he can post photos, and return the watch if there are problems.

OP if you know the serial number you can cross-reference previous posts of other 1675. You should be looking at a Mk1 long-E or possibly mk2 dial.

Service dial, hands, insert etc. are not the expertise of your regular AD.
It will be good for nothing to go there.

Do you have a vintage specialist dealer nearby that you can take it too. T.b.h. a standard contemporary Rolex Dealer will only be able to tell you the case is original at best, unless the staff are also vintage lovers, which is unlikely.

As others have said they won't even probably spot a Tritinova dial or even a Swiss service dial, service hands, bracelet, insert etc etc.

Also it rarely gets talked about here, but I always get everything checked on the lost and stolen register for peace of mind.

Slightly off topic, but this thread reminded me of a little trick that John from the Swiss Watch Company - watches.co.uk in London taught me years and years ago, and that they use a lot esp if concerned about engravings or a dial on an incoming watch.... and I've done also since learning about it.

If you want an impromptu validity check of dial, case and hands etc are Original Rolex supplied (though of course these can be service) - you can take your watch to Rolex HQ in St James' and ask to buy an insert (at say £100)... they take the whole watch off you for an hour or so, you go and have a coffee, and they will only sell you the bezel insert if the rest of the watch passes muster as being 100% legitimate - they also check their L and Stolen register as part of the process (so there is a risk it will get confiscated, as there is with an RSC service too of course!).

Rgds Paul

Agreed.

Funnily enough I was wearing my 16750 (matte dial) to an AD about 12 years ago…ish. Walked in and saw the SA eyeballing my watch on the way in. I walk to the desk and the same SA comes to greet me. I had some sort of question about service (can’t recall what) so I take it off and hand it to him, and within about 5 seconds he says it’s not authentic and hands it back. I tell him he had better check again, so he goes in the back and of course the on-site watchmaker opens it and confirms it’s real. However I think based of that experience there are quite a few clueless people when it comes to vintage at ADs.

Thank you very much. My Rolex dealer deals partly with vintage watches himself and already has some knowledge. Paul's tip I will remember.
