Watch Winders? Please Educate Me

Well, it has come to this- I think I need a watch winder. I have a couple of vintage automatics, plus a Seiko Kinetic that needs to be kept charged. I probably at least need a four watch winder.

I’m a tightwad.

Pros and cons of battery vs. plug in?

What do you recommend?

Thanks!

Got this for about 100$ in amazon. Winds 4 watches plus 6 spots. Plug in is ok (i put it in a spot you cant see the cable. Of course with battery you can put it in a safe

Be careful with the cheaper winders as they can magnetize your watch due to insufficient shielding.

Excellent advice

Advantages of battery? Portability (doesn't need to be near an outlet), not impacted by power outage, convenient for travel, and more easily stored in a safe if that's a consideration.

Advantages of power cord? Maybe an issue with greater power consumption when using a quad winder that favors corded over battery? Not sure. Don't have any personal experience.

I believe Seiko Kinetics need their own winder so you will need two types if you must keep all your watches wound all the time

Thanks for the tips. I didn’t know that about the Seiko. I have a 2005 Big XII championship game Seiko Kinetic, and I really value it, but don’t wear it regularly at all. Evidently the capacitor lasts a lot longer if worn regularly. My old automatics- a Tudor Prince, a vintage Hamilton and my regular wearer (1016). It would be best for them to stay wound, I think.

Edit: forgot to mention that many/most(?) battery powered winders also have a power cord so you have both capability

Look for a good deal on a wolf 4 winder. You can get them half price sometimes. Jomashop runs deals all the time. Most have cord or battery so you can choose.

Go with a Wolf 4 winder model. Pick one. Very good value for the money. They can run on battery power or AC cord. You will need to price shop for the best deal. Perhaps there are specials now for the holiday season.

Not all winders will work with your kinetic just FYI.

just the standard plug-in wolf winders in the closet. I'm really anal when it comes to setting the clock so I rather just not have to do it.

PS. I can't imagine the battery ones lasting long.

I used Wolf for a couple of years. I like the battery function, but was very disappointed on the battery life. Seemed every month I was replacing 2 AA batts.

I bought a Heiden 2 watch winder that takes 2 D Batts, and am very happy with the display, and the battery life.
Batts have lasted 4 months and still had juice left when I swapped for new ones.

I need to clarify... I had Two Wolf Single winders that each took 2 AA batts. The watches didn't display great as the window was small, and the watch pillow was sunk deep into the box.

The Heiden takes four D Batts. Two for each winder which are set independently, and as you can see there is a lot of window display.

Relatively inexpensive.

I also had Orbita, many years ago.
I still stand behind the Heiden.

HTH

Purchased this 4 winder with 6 watch holder from Amazon at a very decent cost.

It has been a good winder for my needs and I have had it for 4 years and still going strong. It has a lock as well. Less than $ 100.00

Cheers.

If storing the winder in a safe where there is no power cord access, battery power is necessary.
