Some amazing pictures on here! Is it me or did Rolex use a bigger font on the date wheel for this model? Every picture I have ever seen of red subs the date looks huge, but the cyclops is still 2.5x mag.

I think its because the crystal is so thick and hence the cyclops is a little higher up

This is a very interesting thread, particularly with regard to serial no's and dial versions. I have a 3.088 Mk.V, as does Red1108NYC, yet there's also a 3.3m and 3.74m Mk.IV's...
Who knows...? Least of all Rolex I imagine. |

Discovered that Jeff's (RLX-lvr) red and mine are only 76 watches apart - makes me wonder about the conditions that caused his dial to turn brown and why mine stayed black. DRSD.com says that the 2.2 to 2.3 serial # dials were the ones most likely to change.
Copied from DRSD.com: The Brown Sub variant, as rare as it is beautiful, was most likely spawned from a manufacturing flaw. This makes it highly sought by collectors worldwide. I would consider a Chocolate Sub a grail watch! In my experience, Brown Dial Subs are only found in Meters First Mark II & Mark III dials and typically in case numbers in the 2.2M or 2.3M ranges. Brown dial subs are Ultra Rare because it is likely that only a small fraction of the dials turned brown and many if not most of those dials were probably destroyed or replaced during service.

i've been told that when Rolex brought out the MkV they were unhappy with how the the red lettering appeared when applied directly onto the dial as opposed to red on white, they reverted back to the MkIV dials again until MkVI was issued

Exactly as you say, I have a 3.059 Mk V, so I don“t understand how can higher case serial numbers come with dials such as Mk IV?

Sweet.
Yes very cool. Dan, I see your dial is starting to show some brown right where the hands mount on the dial, and over by the date opening. So nice to see all these red subs. I know there's more, do please post them. |
