Drove the Falcon Downtown Tonight

I just have a point and shoot digital camera, and goofed around with it tonight during a drive downtown with my daughters in the old convertible.

Thought you might like to see a tiny slice of life in Oklahoma City. I love driving downtown at night - everything is so shiny.

Live music at the Myriad Gardens... tonight it was a jazz band.

Devon Energy Center on the left - the lights continually change color from purple to red, blue, green and white.

Mama Mallard giving us the eye at the Botanic Gardens. I had to shoot in almost total darkness and try to guess where they were in the frame.

That big blue tube contains a tropical garden oasis, open for tours during the day...

Found the old fire truck and car in a bail bondsman's parking lot. Not far from the city/county jail.

That's an awesome cabrio, Lisa....

Looks like things have changed a lot! My last visit to OKC was in 1993 and the downtown was so quiet.

Thanks for sharing.....

Great pics, love the ones at the top with the car and lights on the building.

Cool number plate. Don't know much about plates in the US, but is that a personal one?

Thank you, Wes. I might try staging the first photo again soon, and wait until it's just a little darker. That building has some kind of ties to Flaming Lips musician Wayne Coyne (does that name ring a bell as far as the UK? I'm not sure)- he and a partner bought it as a venue for local band performances.

The number plate is original to the car; somehow it was saved and passed along by each owner since 1963. Owners of classic cars can get permission (for a small fee) to display a vintage tag. We still have to keep current and purchase a modern-day tag, though, and keep it with the vehicle at all times. Ours is in the trunk (boot!).

Thank you - that car is such fun.

I know what you mean - downtown was pretty grim for a few years, wasn't it?

We left OKC in 1995 and returned in 2004. Many great things happened in that time - I think owed to a couple of big corporations like Chesapeake Energy and Devon Energy. Downtown and near-downtown was revitalized and has really re-awakened. People are living downtown and seeking dining/entertainment there. It's pretty exciting.

Shay is the car parked next to the firetruck.

Not yours of course but the replica ragtop.

Thanks for the explanation! The car is one of several owned by our local bail bondsman. Either he has several, or he moves that one around frequently - the cars are parked at random locations downtown, though never far from the jail.

Lisa, that car of yours is really beautiful! I'm not a car man (far from that actually) but I really like the look of older models!

Cute duck picture as well! I guess it brings back souvenirs!

He probably has a couple.

God knows I've had my share of them (20-30 lost track).

Yes, they looked just like our little guy. However, none of these ducklings was the least bit interested in following us around.

You owned 20 or 30 replica cars? Do you build them yourself? I've heard the term "kit car" - is that what these are?

Nice pics, Greg! I really enjoyed seeing those.

I need to get by Ann's Chicken Fry House for the next nighttime photo session. Remember that place, out on 39th Expressway (former Rt. 66)?

Nah, those old brown Route 66 signs have all but vanished. You're right - they get stolen.

No, they were all "factory" built.

Devon energy sure raised the bar on the OKC skyline with that new building!
You could see it all the way from El Reno!
Its about 2 times taller than any building in Phx

Nice pictures, Lisa. I like your Falcon. My dad's first car that he ever bought new was a Ford Falcon that he got while he was in the Air Force in the 60's. He would sure get a kick out of seeing yours, considering its pristine state. Thanks for sharing.

Isn't it something? It's ridiculously tall. I guess they engineered it to withstand tornadoes!

Thanks. I'd enjoy seeing a pic of his old Falcon, too!
