Watch winder?

Currently I own 2 Rolexes, an LN GMT Master II which is worn daily in addition to a Submariner which I intend to keep as a special occassion/weekend piece. Now I’ve read that a watch shouldn’t sit too long and with that being said I’m considering buying a watch winder. Anyone have an advice in regards or can possibly recommend a particular model? Or would I be better off manually winding it every few days? Thanks in advance !

You've read wrong that a watch shouldn't sit too long.

Wind your watch when you go to wear it. Set the time. Enjoy. Put the money saved towards something nice for your wife, fiancee, girlfriend or dog.

What he said - pass on the winders. Not needed.

winders are waste of money unless you have a perpetual annual calendar (which i assume wouldn't be you only watch)

Just wondering, why would you need a winder for perpetual annual calendar? I don’t own one so want to know. Is it due to difficulty setting time?

I use winders. Some watches don’t get worn
All the time. I find it annoying to
Have to reset them. I bought a couple of winders off amazon. If I’m not
Using a watch I throw it
On winder. That way every each time is always ready. I’m
Not sure why most people wouldn’t use them Just out of convenience.

+1 total pain in A**

Perpetual calendar complication displays the day, date and month and the number of days in each month. it also knows the year so that it will automatically adjust for leap year. Some also have moon phase complication too.

So to have your perpetual annual calendar run out of power reserve and let it sit for a while.... it would be a pain in the A** to adjust all those things.

I don't actually own one and have avoided one because of this (+ being extremely expensive and just not my style of watch). Perhaps more seasoned/professional TRF will chime in but that is just my two bits

I already complain when i have to adjust the date or GMT hand so you i just totally said NO to a perpetual annual calendar

I am obviously going to be in the minority in this forum, but I love my watch winder! I have a Wolf winder that keeps my watches perfectly set. It is beautiful, quiet, and reliable!

I love to be able to take on, and take off my watches without having to set them! I highly recommend the Wolf winders!

Thanks for the info. I’m expecting my SkyD this week so that may need to go on my winder. I too hate setting My BLNR.

I have a wolf 3 slot winder, going on four years and its been flawless. I enjoy the convenience of the winder and its another fun way to display my watches and experience the hobby. Not a necessity buy I enjoy it.

I have one but don't use. Doesn't take more than a minute or two to change the time and date. I kinda look forward to doing it.

If your main concern is the health of the movement, giving it a full wind once a month will suffice to keep the oils moving and the stem in good shape. A winder isn't needed for that, especially if you intend to wear the non-daily every week or so. If you're more concerned with keeping the unworn watch from winding down so it will be ready to wear at a moment's notice, then a winder is an option to consider. (That said, that won't exercise the stem, so you'd still probably want to give it a wind periodically.)

I have an Orbita Sparta Deluxe. I like it because it's very gentle and quiet; it also shields the watch from any magnetism from the winder motor. In other words, it does away with the typical criticisms leveled at most winders, except for the questionable wisdom of keeping an unworn watch running constantly and incurring wear. (The Deluxe version puts the basic winder in a wood case; the case is purely aesthetic, and doesn't add to function. The basic winder (either the Bold or the Vibrant) is the most cost-effective Sparta option.)

Nothing nicer than sitting with your watches winding them up and setting the time, I would choose that over a winder anyday

I bought a cheap winder from eBay and stopped using it after a few months. It did the job in terms of keeping the watch from stopping, but I stopped using it as I much prefer winding them manually

I have used watch winders for years and have owned expensive ones, $1000 plus, to less expensive ones that are sub $100. They all wear out and eventually need to be replaced. When the two that I have now quit on me, I will not replace them and will wind my watches as I wear them. I will save my money for something that I want.

Not just that, it is best to let them advance through the days while running, manually setting them is a strain on the calendar system and when done incorrectly it can even be harmful.

That is why Patek supplies every perpetual calendar watch with a winder.

I share your opinion on winders.
Just think of it this way, the more winders they use, the more watches I can repair

What's the longest any of yours have lasted? My Orbita is 11 years old and still going strong.
