Police Officers (2) down, Chicago PD

Police Officer Eduardo Marmolejo and Police Officer Conrad Gary were struck and killed by a South Shore Line commuter train yesterday while investigating a shots-fired call in the area of 103rd Street and Dauphin Avenue at 6:20 pm.

They were investigating the sounds of gunfire that had been detected by a ShotSpotter sensor in the area. As they arrived at the scene they observed a suspect running up an embankment toward the railroad tracks. They were both struck by the outbound train while they pursued him across the tracks near the 103rd Street Rosemoor station.

A handgun and shell casings were recovered near the scene by other officers. The suspect they were chasing was apprehended a short time later.

Officer Marmolejo had served with the Chicago Police Department for 2-1/2 years and was assigned to the 5th District - Calumet. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Officer Gary had served with the Chicago Police Department for 18 months and was assigned to the 5th District - Calumet. He is survived by his wife and child.

Godspeed my brothers, may your family and friends find peace amidst this terrible tragedy.

RIP. Great example of why evading or resisting arrest is a terrible idea. Puts everyone involved and nearby in danger

Certain parts of chicago's south and west sides have become embarrassing. Unfortunately, duty compelled these officers to enforce the law in neighborhoods where the law is widely ignored.

May they both rest in peace. My thought and prayers are with their families both blood and blue.

That district has had a bad year, 2 sucides in the parking lot and an officer collapsed and died in lock up. Both young kids that lived within a mile of me. Body cam was recovered, they didn’t even see it coming. One train was coming towards them and they were talking. Train going in the other direction came up from behind and that was it. Train was going between 60-70 mph. The train was electric and the fact another was coming drowned out the sound. Also they dim the lights when coming up on each other as not to blind the other conductor. Just a terrible way to go. The only thing I can take is that they didn’t see it coming and it was quick. Just last Saturday there was a street detication for an officer killed a few years ago, one of these officers lived on that very block.
