First Rolex help

Hi,

Looking to get a Rolex DJ, Submariner or GMT Master II as they are all roughly around the same price. I'm not a diver...but looking for a everyday watch. What would you recommend for a first rolex (may be my only). Also is it harder to get a specific model from an AD?

Thanks!

Which one do you like the most? They’re all different enough, you should have a clear preference.

It depends what your every day looks like. For me, it's mostly desk work. I don't like polished centre links and I've always had an affinity toward the Sub - so that was the obvious choice.

In reality, pretty much any Rolex can be used as a daily.

My advice is GMT Pepsi, which is ideal for any occasion. Suit, t shirt/ shirt and jeans or shirt and shorts.

I was in the same process and ended up with a Sub. Very happy with my choice since it wears well in any occasion. No history at the AD and had to go premium on C24.

BTW, I don't anyone dive with their Sub.

For those that got GMT Master II or subs recently, I assume they are harder to get and there is a "waitlist" from the AD? How long did you wait?

In order of preference:

1) GMT - dual functions with colourful bezel
2) Sub - well, a sports model
3) DJ - nothing much to boost

With the economy in Calgary, you might be able to get one, but here no way are you getting a sub or GMT from an AD.

On the other hand, pretty much every AD here has DJs in the display case.

Always get what you like, but I think the BLRO would be a perfect one watch collection.

This. Three different flavors. You should instantly know which one you prefer.

Buying from an AD your best and possibly only shot would be a DJ. I wouldn't feel short changed at all though. It's a great piece and with a black dial it would be an excellent gada one to have.

Looking at pics online is one thing. You really need to try them on. If you have a reseller near you go try them on beacuse they wear differently. Id choose the GMT personally.

DJ - Easy
Sub - Doable
GMT - Good luck

All things equal, go with a black Sub - a classic, they never disappoint, and are the most flexible in terms of wear.

With Rolex your choice may come down to what Rolex wants to sell you instead what you want. Good luck!

Choice at every AD around here (at least what gets shown to mere mortals in the display cases) is very limited and pretty much down to OPs and DJs. I've stumbled on ONE EII, saw ONE Skydweller, a few Cellinis, and that's it.

That being said, I gave up on my hunt for an Explorer, and fell in love with a dark rhodium DJ41 on Oyster with smooth bezel. For me, I am actually glad since it is a hell of a versatile piece (more so than the Explorer, IMHO) and I just love it.

Black sub or DJ are both extremely versatile and classic. I think both would make incredible one watch collections. That being said, I personally like a splash of color and have a couple of GMTs. So, just try on as many as possible and pick the one that excites you the most.

To buy new from a dealer, you'll be hard pressed to get a sub or GMT. You can always go grey and overpay, but that's what it is these days. Most dealers have a handful of datejusts to choose from. They are great watches, just not quite what a sports/professional model is. For your first high-quality Swiss watch you'll love a datejust also. Just pick one that sings to you in person.
