Rolex Daytona - does this bother anyone??

I'm looking to purchase either a full YG or RG Daytona or Skydweller in the near future.

I'm starting to lean more towards a Skydweller, since the Daytona doesn't have the "date" function on the watch.

How do other members feel about this?

Date is nice if only watch / main watch.

Missing date doesnt bother me int he mix of lots of watches, largely due to resetting them issues most show wrong dates most of the time anyways.

Much has been written about the lack of a date on the Daytona, however, none of it matters unless it matters to you.

I'm perfectly fine without the date. 1/2 my watches have it, 1/2 don't.

I actually prefer no date on any watch that isn’t being utilized as my ‘main’ watch. It’s looks cleaner and more symmetrical.

Honestly it really annoys me not having a date all the time though. I could never be a ‘Yellow gold Daytona and that’s it’ kind of guy for that exact reason.

With all that being said, I really, really, REALLY hope they don’t add a date to it when they finally release the ‘12’ series Daytona as it will be coming soon. Just makes sense with practically everything else being in the 12’s. I’m hoping for a slight case increase, new dials and that’s it.

I'm a "date guy" in general but certainly wouldn't mind a Daytona however I wouldn't wear it daily as my one and only. There are plenty of great chronographs that have the date complication (i.e. Omega, Lange, Patek, JLC, others.).

JLC just launched a annual calendar chrono that looks pretty nice and in steel is competitively priced.

Seems like "most" people here are not one-watch collectors and therefore a non-date Rolex (Daytona, no-date Sub, Milgauss, OP) is a great option to add to your rotation.

If you want a Daytona, you must be fine without a date.
It never had and I dont think it ll ever will.

That JLC chrono-date-cal is an insane watch and even more insane value. So that's a very good call

oP

If you want a do all watch, that JLC is easily it unless you get into big complication watches.

The breitling movement, as used in the Tudor chrono is a good call but that, breitling and even the omega co-axial speedys are all so big.

I don't miss the date on the Daytona. In fact I find setting the date a pain in the....

I prefer time only or chrono

I can't imagine how they could fit a date into the already perfect dial of the Daytona. That said I prefer no date and almost all of my watches are no date.

Lack of date does not bother me. Illegibility of the dial does though.

Agree with bp1000 on time-only chronos. In fact, when you look back at the classic 1950s chronos (i.e. Patek Ref. 130s) most were time only. The simplicity and focus of no date, moonphase, slide rule. etc. adds to the purity of the chronograph complication.

I thought this would really bother me as I use the date function all the time, but I’ve been wearing my Daytona every day for months and barely miss it. Not enough to change how much I love my Daytona, that’s for sure.

The cyclops is disgusting IMO. Big reason I personally love the no-date sub, and Daytona personally is because they don't have Rolex's half-assed cyclops.

Many of my watches don't even have a second hand. Lack of a date function is not an issue for me.

Someone recently posted how he used his Daytona chrono function as a calendar. I thought that while a bit labor intensive, it was kind of cool.

I'm the kind of guy that automatically pulls out my phone to check the date anyways so I usually lean towards no date for the look. Just looks simpler and cleaner to me.

I used to adjust the sweep second hand to the date. I don't bother anymore as every place I look I can see the date. My computers, computers in the lab, my phone, my car, calendars etc., etc.

I love having a date on my watch. This is the one watch, IMO, that shouldn’t have it on the dial, the dial is very symmetrical without it.
For a Daytona, I gladly go without.

The purpose of the Daytona as the name suggest is for auto racing. You don't need a date function for that. Yes, we know... most people don't race with their watch, but Rolex isn't known to make "dramatic" changes to their watch designs.

I'm more than certain they've explored the option for it, but dropped it.

Aesthetically, I think it would hinder the watch more than it helps. I honestly don't wear a watch for anything other telling simple time or "man jewelry". With our lives (unless we are retired... even then) requiring schedules, meetings, appointments here and there, I tend to know which day it is. Time is the only thing you lose track of.

I've been dateless for a while. You lose track of where you are in the month but it doesn't really matter that much. Having a date on hand again is really nice but not essential. Most people don't even wear watches so we're just nuts.

If a date was a requirement for me, I wouldn't be looking at a Daytona, Sub, Air King, Milgauss, or any of the other non-date models.

It is not a short-coming of the model, it's a personal issue

I prefer it without a date. I also like the bb for the same reason. Just grab set the time and go.

Never cared or worried. I think it's clean and if I need the date asap, I usually have my smartphone close by.

It doesn't bother me (my favorite watch is the 114060) but I think the Skydweller is absolutely a better watch.

This was the main reason AD's used to give them out for free in the 60's that soon stopped I think the no date would bother me but that's because I'm so used to looking at my Sub with a date...

Absolutely does bother me. I own a Daytona and I don’t wear it much for that exact reason.

This is my preference
