I was walking around today in HK and stopped by a grey seller shop here in HK that I use to frequent but hadn't been in for quite some time. BOOM...there it was in the glass window display. A Patek 5970j brand new. The owner told me he has another one that is 99% condition. Price seems to be very attractive and ~$30k below what I've seen advertised by sellers in the states. With the used one being $10k less than the new one.

Question I am debating now is whether to trade in a bulk of my collection to obtain this monster! I would need to sell the following to make the numbers work:

(1) Rolex WG skydweller
(2) Rolex platinum day date 2
(3) AP RG ROO 44mm novelty
(4) AP 15202 jumbo

This would leave me with:

(1) Patek 59801r
(2) Patek 5970j
(3) Rolex DSSD
(4) Rolex YG GMT2c

Would you do it? Kind of fun thinking about it! Going to post in the Patek forum as well to get balanced views.

Yes given what you are selling, I would do this in a split second.

Wow! H I just looked at google what a nice piece. My holy grail is a Patek 5036j. I obviously am not at your level but with the pieces you have listed as keeping I would go for it. Good luck and wear that amazing collection in good health.

Awesome grail but there is some lovely watches you would be losing, and while I have no worries about wearing a platinum DD anywhere they would be another step up again on a leather strap, I would worry about losing it.

Agree with you. I think the 5970j would be a safe queen. Especially if I went with the new one since it's still sealed in original Patek platic sealed bag.

Yes I definitely would consolidate. Your 'after' collection is much more attractive to me.

Giving up the platinum DD, among others, for a safe queen? Not for me, but I'm in a different place with watches. And I'm not as much of a fan of the heavy duty dive watches. But you've got a very exclusive collection.
And not to be persnickety, but there is no 'ultimate' Grail...it's either a grail or not.

That would be true hardest one for me to give up. But for a 5970 which is arguably one of the best Pateks I would consider giving up the platinum dd2.

Giving up four daily wearable watches for one that rides the shelf if a safe. I would have to pass.
Plus the DD is just a sweet watch, wouldn't want to let that go if I already had it.

Any way you would consider keeping the DayDate and flipping the YG GMT instead?

If the 5970 is going to be a safe queen, what's the point? I understand babying a watch like that but to never wear it would be a shame.

Consolidate for 1 ultimate Grail?

Honestly, for me it would totally depend on how much wrist time it would get.

I'm pretty function oriented - if you will.

The ones on the 'chopping block' are awesome daily wearers...

A tough one, the 5970 is def one of the watches I would consolidate a whole lot for, but the J is my least favourite, I prefer the R and the P ofc. I would keep the AP 44mm and 5980/1R and 1/2 others.

Not a chance for me if it is going to sit in the safe! There are far better things than watches to invest your money in which is essentially all you are talking about doing. Plus to actually get rid of your DD and SkyD to do it seems ludicrous.

That said, only you can know what it will mean to you to own the Patek whether its in the safe or not!!!

For a watch that will sit in a safe it makes no sense. There are much better investments to make.

I don't know what retail is but I see them going for US$150k in the states brand new. If retail is $150k then yes the price I was quoted was $30k below retail.

I have to agree with those in the NO camp. I have had the pleasure of owning (currently and in past) several of the models you list.

The pieces that you are looking to give up give your collection fantastic wear-ability and diversity. IMHO They also happen to be some of the coolest watches around....period.

I would not give all of them up for what is undeniably a fantastic horological model....that would wind up sitting in the safe.

Let us know what you decide.
