without knowing what you have and where are you heading with your collection, is hard to sway you one way or the other. To me the ideal combo for you would be 5396G for a daily wear and the 5712R for your power watch/weekend. Of course every lifestyle is different so this might not mean to much to you.

I like the 5712R. It is more versatile and can serve as a sporty piece on the rubber strap and can be dressy with the gator strap.

An Annual Calendar is a more significant complication than a power reserve. And with prices being fairly close, you get more of a complication in the 5396R. Although it is not widely discussed, Patek patented the AC back in 1996 and released their 20 year anniversary version 5396 in 2016.
The 5396R is a very nice dress watch. However ultimately it is best to get a watch that you will enjoy wearing. |

I absolutely love my 5712r. Not the most common pp. Rose gold pops and the dial is warm and simply stunning. For not a lot more money than a 5712a, it's a no brainer in my mind.
Whilst i like the 5396, i think it's a lot more boring. |

Thank you all for your advice. I will probably go for the 5712 and save some money for the future acquisition of the perpetual calendar 5327r, my dream watch. Cheers

5712r is more versatile and works with anything. It can definitely be dressy or sporty.

I don't think it got mentioned...one can do the Patek rubber strap on the Nautilus which I think is great for daily/upscale casual - sport.

i have been looking around and thinking about picking up my first patek maybe later this year. But is it even possible to get a 5712 at retail? How much is the average market up at the moment.

5712R, then again the SS is my favorite watch under 50k, so easy answer, I even hesitated with getting the RG instead of the 5167R...

Whilst I am resurrecting an older thread, I am interested to understand which piece you went for @Wazen?
There are some valid points in this thread; the 5396R is a beautiful piece (particularly in my view with in the 012 variant with the Breguet numerals), whilst the 5712R is likely more versatile, being able to serve as both a casual and a dress watch. One consideration may be resale, where I expect (though perhaps others know?) the 5712R may fare (materially?) better - though I cannot see any specific reason for it to as, as others have said, the 5396R is both more classic and complicated. If you are generally one to adjust their collection over time (as I have been!) then perhaps that is an important factor - and one where others can add their comment. |
