Hello,

I own a 5512 with ser# 1,269,xxx...1958 or 1965?

I'm going to be selling the watch and need some advice on best method, pricing opinions...etc.

Here's a history of the watch as I know it - I purchased the watch in 1982/1983 from a pilot in AZ who needed quick cash, had it checked out by a jeweler in Scottsdale to determine authenticity and then proceeded to wear it daily for the next 25+ years. I wore it as a watch, tool, and did not have it serviced until 2011 and have not worn it since. And then I only had it serviced because the crystal was shattered, still usable but shattered when looked across at a sharp angle. At that time I did not know what I had and had it completely reconditioned by Rolex so it remains in that condition, all patina lost. A shame, I now know. Also, it's on a non-Rolex SS band, I wore the old band out years ago and misplaced it somewhere along the line. Thanks in advance for your comments. - Rob

....and further to that, I would now confirm 1965. I have records of two other 126xxxx 5512s, the first with a chrono cert dated August 1965 and the other with a III.65 case-back. This also fits perfectly with the official Rolex listing pinned next to me as I write. Conclusive for me!

To post pictures that are on your device or are accessible from it, click on any "Post Reply" box. This will bring up a blank message box. In the first line under the word "Message" you will see a symbol that looks like a paperclip in the middle of the line. Click on the paperclip and it will bring up a box called "manage attachments". Click on the first "Choose File" box, and locate the first picture on your device. Click on "open" and the file name of the picture should appear next to the first "Choose File" box. Repeat for the next picture, and so on. When all pictures have been listed, click on the "upload" button.

After your pictures are uploaded, you can preview and post them in the message.

Any 5512 is a rare piece, more so than many seem to realise.

Did you have the dial, hands and bezel insert swapped when you had that service work done in 2011 or at some time earlier?

It is contended that the word SUBMARINER was not positioned above the depth rating until later than your watch was manufactured. Is it in fact luminova rather than tritium - do the indices glow with a slightly greeny hue in the dark?

A very nice maxi dial nonetheless !

Thank you for taking a look, I appreciate it very much.

The hands, dial and bezel insert were all replaced in 2011, I do not believe that any of them had been replaced prior, certainly not since I purchased the watch in 1982. I seem to recall that the bezel was a fat font version, but that is from memory and I put the watch away in 2006 so it has been quite some time since I was looking at it daily. As far as 2 line or 4 line dial, I want to say it was always 4 line as the dial appearance in my memory was as it is now.

Do you have thoughts on best method to sell? it's currently on eBay however I would rather deal one on one with a buyer. Any thoughts on reasonable price range?

Yes, they glow slightly green in color and are actually very bright.

Ok, it will be a luminova service dial, but the earlier version which still bore tritium legend at six o'clock. Still a rare piece, but the modern dial will lose you many buyers.

With this dial I would expect it to be around the £5,000 mark --- but also think it would offer a buyer very good value at this price point.

I do not think it appropriate for me to discuss other routes to a sale, for fear of falling foul of forum rules or lest it be said that I have an axe to grind.
