White gold Daytona vs Patek annual calendar

I know these are not comparable on so many levels, but still I ask the question...

All else equal would you take a white gold panda Daytona or a rose gold Patek annual calendar. The Rolex is newer, more subtle being in white gold, more modern looking and certainly more versatile. The Patek is classic, more formal, more complicated but does not have full papers (it is an older watch after all and I am finding this is much more common on non modern pieces...)

Collection apart from these is:

Sd4k 116600
Speed master worn on various leather straps
VC overseas Chrono deep stream on rubber/leather

Which of these two do you think rounds out the collection better assuming it only consists of these four watches?

Patek every day of the week.

Your collection lacks a dress watch as well.

The “remaining” watches listed lack a dress piece I agree. At the moment I also have the JLC master calendar in meteorite but that may need to go if the Patek takes up permanent residence.

Is the lack of a certificate of origin for the Patek not as big a deal as I thought then?

To clarify I own the Daytona but am considering a trade for the Patek. While I am not so worried about “resale value” given I would want to hold whichever piece I decide on long term all my watches so far have been either bought new pre owned with full box and papers. Should I care about a certificate of origin for the Patek!?

The COO is important, but you can always get an Extract from the Archives from Geneva.

Yes I read about that. If I got the extract as well as a service do you think that gives enough credibility? I.e. if I factor in the cost of a service and archive papers but still come out spending less is that preferable to buying something with a COO for more $$$?

I would always go for a COO but service and Extract are sufficient . If you plan on holding it doesn’t really matter.

This. I really think the Patek is a better fit for your collection than the Daytona and the JLC Master Calendar Meteorite.

I’d drop the Daytona/JLC and add this Patek in a heartbeat. Just have it serviced and get an extract from their archive, and you’ll be good to go.

Patek. No contest.

BUT if it’s going to be a Daytona, that’s a darn nice one.

White gold Daytona vs Patek annual calendar

I’ll go for the 5146 with Arabic numbers (plus the Moonphase) and not romans.
If it has to be this 2, then Daytona

Thanks all. While the 5146 is nice they are more expensive and the 5035 feels like a nice entry to PP. Sounds like a service and extract from the archives will put me in a good enough spot should I ever need to sell it and give me some comfort buying a piece that is not vintage but certainly not new.

Jorge, as the lone dissenter you have me thinking twice though :)

Patek, no brainer.

A WG Ceramic Daytona on Otsterflex would make it a more interesting discussion!

I agree with Jorge.
Find a nice preowned 5146.

When purchasing a preowned Patek, it is important who you buy it from. How reputable is the reseller? Is there service history? Are you looking to send it to Patek immediately for servicing?

The older 5035 is certainly a better "value" Patek AC than the current 5146.

Another question to ponder is - if you want an AC, have you considered the SkyDweller or are you seeing this as an opportunity to get into the Patek world?

Ha. Thanks guys. That seems pretty balanced which means no decision will be made! Also, the wife is less keen on the 5035 so guess that's out.

I like the OF Daytona but realistically I don't see it as $10k better than what I have.

I love the look of the skydweller but felt like it was too big the first time I saw one. I would love it in 40mm. Maybe I should try another on and consider trading the Daytona for a Skydweller if it feels right this time around.

Between these two, I would go with the 5035 Patek Annual. I believe these are severely undervalued in the market, to the point where they are trading for the same prices as 5107/5127 Calatravas and slightly above Rolex money. For a world first annual, which I believe in years to come will become collectible, this is a steal in comparison to a drop in the bucket Daytona that isn't very special compared to the rest.

A bunch of people recommended the current model 5146 but if you are looking to collect, a first edition release of a complication that Patek invented would probably fair better in the long run imo.

Patek Saturday night when you are at a dress dinner wearing your smoking and sipping Krug champagne.

Daytona 7 x 24 including when you wear your smoking Saturday night.

Tan, that is partly my thinking. They seem good value despite the fact that with an unlimited budget there are certainly other watches I would choose. If I was a one watch guy I would buy what I love and not care about the resale but I always have one eye on values in case I want to trade.

Jack, I hear you! I feel like the Daytona is certainly more versatile. At the same time I have a VC overseas chrono and never use the chrono function so swapping for the Patek would keep precious metal in my collection while adding Patek and an annual calendar.

Hmmmm, clear as mud

Eta: if I simply wanted to add an annual calendar I would choose a stainless skydweller (if I could get comfortable with the size) over the 5035 as it is so much more versatile but feel like swapping my Daytona for one would be a step down some how. Figure that out then...

Daytona>=skydweller>=5035>=Daytona

Disagree, I wear my 5035 all week and it's fine dressed up or dressed down. Granted, I have a white gold model so a yg would probably be a bit much imo

For an AC can you get to a 5396 with Breguet numerals?
