Does Patek use Rhodium Plating on white gold case and bracelet?
Does Patek use Rhodium Plating on the white gold case and bracelet?
If this true, when we polish the white gold case watch, even with cape cod cloth, the rhodium plating will be gone, the color is back to the natural white gold color. |

According to Patek, yes - WG cases are coated. Depending on the amount of polishing you will need to replate the watch eventually.

Does anyone have a "definitive statement" on this from Patek itself? |

Ive read somewhere that Patek no longer do rhodium coating, however this is still uncertain.

Wake me up when someone makes the whole case out of rhodium. Would be very expensive but isnt that what luxury is about? Rhodium plating is like DLC coated black titanium or steel. Hides the real color of the metal.

Rhodium plating was phased out in the early to mid 2000s. When asking Patek Germany regarding a specific piece I was interested in they offered to find out based on the case number. They said reference number is not enough as certain references were apparently produced w and w/o the plating.

5146g is also coated with rhodium, so polishing is not recommended. Was told by a Patek service center.

Believe they switched to grey gold (non-plated) by around 2005-2006.

Some models are plated, the coating can and does wear off but it can be easily restored. They have a special machine to restore the rhodium coating in the finishing room of the service centre.

Does anybody know the answer to the following two questions:
1) Is it possible to completely remove the Ruthenium coating rather than restore it? 2) Did Patek change the composition of their white gold when they stopped plating with Ruthenium? Thanks! |
