Diamond between the lugs?

Is there a known reason Patek puts a flawless diamond between the lugs of their platinum watches?

I can only find this (which gets repeated on other websites).

The present watch further features a diamond on the watch case under 6 o'clock above the lugs, which is an indication and hallmark of platinum Patek Philippe watches. Dial, case and movement are signed.

It was first introduced in 1990s I think. My guess is to make the owner feels special about platinum compared to steel watches.

There was an article about this in the latest PP magazine about the 6301P. No fancy rationale other than to differentiate the watch from other white metal watches.

One tidbit was that the interview noted that they have an unreleased model slated for 2023 where T Stern has ”no idea” where to put the diamond. Meaning that there’s stuff blocking the space berween lugs at both 6 and 12.

I read this indeed, I thought about a very thin case or lately maybe the hobnail pattern?

This.

Not a fan personally and happy that my 3998P still came w/o diamond in 1999. Baguette markers such as on 5170P or a platinum Day Date or Daytona are a different story.

The diamond is placed in a very discrete location so that others cannot even see it when the watch is worn on the wrist.

I think it is a nice little feature to remind owners that the platinum case is special and produced in fairly limited numbers compared to other metals.

I'm more curious, is the diamond actually flawless?

I assume with it being such a small diamond it's easier to achieve, but would be curious it was actually a "perfect" diamond?

I think overall its a nice touch, I know certain jewelry brands does it for all their pieces. I.e. De Beers being mainly a diamond based company puts a small diamond on all their non-diamond pieces. Essentially a little small signature.

I am not an expert on diamonds and not sure what a "flawless" diamond is. I have only heard of the 4 C's.

Many ladies Patek watches have diamonds on them.. AFAIK, the diamonds on ladies Patek are high grade, but I don't think they are flawless. I can't imagine a small piece of diamond on platinum Patek watches are flawless, although I have not looked at my platinum watches under the loupe.
