Thoughts on the 5140G

Curious on owner experiences with the 5140, particularly the G white gold model? I know most prefer the 3940 but like that the case size is slightly larger.

Thanks

I love mine, I was able to buy one at an AD in Singapore years after it was discontinued.

My wrist is on the small side and the 5140G fits me very well. Pic in the thread below and comparison with 5196G

Wow, what a pick-up! The 5140 is beautiful on its own and I was looking for them at one point in time. Can't find anything like them in current lineups.

Beautiful, exact model i want. I located a NOS one and am working with the dealer on a fair price.

Out of curiosity do the squished numbers bother you? They don't bother me but i know that is a gripe with many collectors.

Can’t get over the distorted date numbers that ruin it for me. 3940 is my choice. Only 1mm difference in diameter, right?

The 5140 is an excellent reference. The "squished number" is an exaggeration and you don't notice it unless you are looking at it under a loupe. It is a good size at 37mm. The 3940 was a lot less expensive than the 5140, so many people often bought the 3940J as a "value watch" since it was selling under $40k USD for the longest time. Not sure how much the 3940J is selling for now.

But if you want a white metal PC, the 5140G is an excellent choice. Try to get a complete set with a Patek wonder and a second caseback if you can.

Seems this is the main gripe!

Makes sense. I think full sets are on the $50k range for the 3940J, more for the rose and white metals.

The 5140G I have my eyes on is actually NOS. Complete set winder, caseback, setting pin, papers etc.

Ended up pulling the trigger. Had a custom strap I had made by PP for a 5227 that I no longer own which fits this model perfect.

What a watch!

I agree - the numbers don't really bother me at all, I like the 5140G. I'm not a big fan of second hand watches and I can't find a sealed 3940...

What kind of straps do you like it on most?

Molequin are pretty nice. They have a nice selection of 19 x 16.
