First Patek Ideas

Hi all. Apologize if this topic comes up frequently but I could not find a recent thread. What first Patek is timeless and classic. White gold, conservative look. Currently I have a JLC Master Control Date on a black JLC strap that sort of serves that mission.

I’d say a Calatrava, either the 6119G or one of the 5227s.

Another way to go is to jump the Calatrava line and go straight to Complications, particularly an Annual Calendar, the classic complication that Patek invented. In this case, I’d go 5205G or 5396G.

Can’t go wrong with what you do here, they are all so great . . .

Your best bet in terms of availability at AD is probably a 5396G or R.

There are plenty of choices in the grey market.

For current collection (if you are buying from AD), only the 5227G, 5396G, 5327G and 6119G fit your description. 5738 is either a R or P.

5205 is a good first choice.

Get a Calatrava preowned or new.

Some ADs still have the recently discontinued manual 5196 left which IMO will prove to be a lot more timeless and classic than the current 6119. Or go automatic with 5227 from AD or 5296, 5127/5107, or 3998 preowned depending on the size you like. I'd also look at platinum if you like white gold.

agree on 5196. Some ads still have them.

For me Patek sings chronograph more than anything else. This one on a calf strap is understated but beautiful.

It depends on how much money you want to spend on your first Patek. Calatravas, Annual Calendars and a World Time may be reasonable options.

The only thing about 5196... ALS does the same concept better with Saxonia. The movement in 5196 is a bit dated and the caseback is solid. However, not a bad start. I'd go with 5227g.

Either way... One and done. Good suggestions here.

For me 5172G wears very well and very simple, it could be an everyday wear.

+1 on the 5172g, first patek and much of the 2022 novelties have similar design cues..the movement in back is gorgeous! Also wears casual with current trends

Vintage PP for classic, nice handcrafting too.
