I would guess most of you were not your wife's first, so why would it matter if you were the first owner of a piece of metal on your arm?

When I started collecting it didn't matter to me at all. I actually prefered second hand watches due to the fact that they were cheaper then ;).

Now being the first owner of a watch really matters to me. It's probably silly, but I totally agree with the notion, that otherwise it does not feel like "my" watch. I just don't know how the previous owner has treated the watch. If I buy a second-hand watch now, I immediately send it off to factory service to make it mine. It's unnecessary and silly most of the time, but that's what I do.

It even becomes more important once archives and the like come into play. I bought my first Patek this year and since I'm planning to hand down at least one high-end watch (Patek, AP or something similar) to each one of my kids, having my name on the certificate and in the archives is really important to me.

I would prefer to be the first owner. As others have mentioned the watch would have a more of a "my watch" feel. When and if I ever get the call for a Submariner it will most likely be the most expensive watch I ever purchase. I plan on leaving it to my son.

No, and I don't personally understand the level of fixation on "box and papers" or a card or "stickered" or "unpolished".

This is about the watch and I don't need perfection here to make me happy. YMMV.
