1984 Rolex

So I'm wanting to purchase a piece from 1984 (my birth year), and I want something that will stand the test of time, no pun intended. Any suggestions? I'd like to stay Under 15k if possible. Im always worried about anything made in the 80's

Personally I think birth year watches are a bit overrated. If a mint example came along with a full set and was a 1986 (or something) I think it would be daft to pass up.

That said, I would say something like a 16800 would be a great buy. Should find a good example for that budget.

My 1984 watch was a very substantial and well made two tone GMT master on Oyster bracelet. It was a very wonderful watch and imo the epitome of the 80s…

I’d probably go Explorer or a DJ on Oyster. If you’re open to Tudor, I’d prefer a Jumbo, like the 9080/0. If money were no object, I’d go 1019 Milgauss.

I had a 1982 Rolex 16753 GMT Rootbeer with nipple dial and jubilee bracelet. Absolutely beautiful with a ton of character. Often got comments. I believe there's a 1984 version.

Something on an oyster bracelet as the jubilee from this era isn’t very robust.

Its not easy to find one in very good condition if you are rigid about the year. If you do find one, it will cost you a bomb.
Easier option is to look for 16710 from the late 90s to early 2000s.

If you choose a GMT, you could go with a glossy dial GMT 16750 or the GMT II model 16760. There are a few differences between the two models so I would recommend you do some research on each model.

Another option would be a Submariner 16800 with the date function or a Submariner 5513 without the date function.

You should be able to find nice examples of any of these models for around $15,000 or less with complete sets being a few thousand dollars more.

You should choose the style and look that you want since all of Rolex models were available during that era.

Some of your choices will be outside your price range, but you should be able to find what you want.
