Datejust 2 minor refurb and mild customisation

I recently purchased this DJII, I picked it up in less than stellar condition from a work colleague. He’d stopped wearing it and decided to cash in and I had cash on the hip.

I wanted a DJ41 or DJ2 with a dark dial, I decided in 2016/7. The blue or the black would fit the bill perfectly but as prices crept up, I was busy buying the sports Rolex that I wanted more.....

2020 being as 2020 was, I’d traded into a 36mm 16013 as it was a good deal at the time, just before lockdown happened. During lockdown, I dallied with the Pelagos LHD and a Jaeger Reverso but when I was offered this DJ2 in the first few days of Jan 2021 I sold both of those to purchase.

Lo and behold

Wrong dial, but we’ll come to that later......

Whilst it was a complete set, every item present, it had plenty of wabi and whilst I like a watch to look natural (I’m not interested in having this cut back and cut back) it needed a clean and TLC.....

Note the highlighted areas, it hadn’t been cleaned after being put in its box a couple of years ago. It’s a 2014 watch BTW.

So to confirm I am a hobbyist only, I have no machinery or training but have learned a lot from Paul and Paul on TZ UK (WALKERWEK1958/Gingerboy) and YouTube.

Anyway......

Before:-

Some during cleaning and polishing by hand:-

Then after:-

I’ll never get rid of dinks by hand but that’s not what I’m trying to do

I’m more than happy, cost me £4500 (appx $6000) to purchase

And finally, the modification:-

It’s been to my watchmaker for a service and dial swap

So I got it back after dial change

Dial removed

Gratuitous Lume shot

Thanks for reading

Love it! Such a great price, and though I love the concentric dial, I prefer the contrast with the new black dial. Great move.

Wow, beautiful!!!! I love watching those videos of watch restoration. You have to really wonder what's so difficult about warm water, a toothbrush, and some Dawn. Some of those watches are disgusting!!!!

That's a great result. I wish more dealers would clean watches in this manner before sale instead of going straight to the polishing wheel for the edges to be lost. What you did takes a little more time I'm sure, but a better result.

I'm a bit lost with this thread. Was the silver dial incorrect? How did it end up on it in the first place? How did you acquire the black dial? Can you do that at service? And of course was it expensive?

But anyway, the watch looks fantastic. I love it with the black dial. May it serve you well and give you many years of enjoyment.

Too much like the Yachtmaster I had my eye on and subsequently purchased, but YMMV

The rhodium dial was originally fitted to the watch from the factory, but I wanted a black dial so I sourced from a Rolex specialist (original Rolex dial) that had been removed from new to be replaced with a diamond dial.

The dial was expensive but I recouped my cost by selling the rhodium.
