Would you pay grey price for RG Olive DD40

Hey guys-

Looking for some feedback. Am I out of my mind to be considering paying grey for the RG Olive day day 40?

I am afraid if they discontinue it’ll be permanently inaccessible.

Would love some feedback to either send me over or walk me down from this cliff.

Thank you all!!

You do you, but prices on that model are really high and it doesn’t speak to me at all. The great thing is this is an individual sport, if you love it it buy it. As my grandmother says, you only go this way once.

How much is the premium?

It depends on how much you want it. If the premium is small, then maybe yes.

No, but that’s more because I’d rather have the white or sun dust dial for the RG DD.

Is your AD able to secure a “regular” (they’re all equally special) dialled RG DD40? If so, call RSC and confirm if olive green dial swaps are still possible. (They were last I heard.) If that’s the case, buy a different dial and get the dial swapped (see if you can keep the original dial too in case you want to go back later). You’ll save money vs grey and you’ll have more of a dealer relationship (useful for next time).

If you can’t dial swap and you’re worried that it will be cancelled, well, only you can decide if it’s worth it. But I’d look into the dial swap first. Just ask the AD and RSC and get a confirmation for both before proceeding. If they won’t dial swap a brand new watch, you could try and find one that is less than five years old (still has warranty), dial swap it and get it serviced at the same time (so warranty for any big items and then 2 more years covered post RSC servicing). Just some suggestions

Grey Market is an option on obtaining watches that you can not get through the AD system. The questions I usually ask myself is how much do I want the watch, what is the amount over msrp, what is the sale or trade value once I buy the watch. Once I have all of these questions answered then I can make an informed decision. Putting all of that aside there is nothing that tells us that the current situation on availability will improve nor is there anything that tells us prices will go down. I believe that on most luxury items, nothing gets cheaper in the long term. I would talk to our Trusted Sellers, get your best price and buy the watch. It is beautiful and will be with you for a lifetime should you choose. I typically do not have a problem with the price I paid if the watch really does it for me. Keep us posted on what you decide.

Yes, why not? Especially if you think it will soon be unobtainable. With the current trend of the watch market, you can always exit the watch for equal to or more $.I've been watching the Olives go up $500 a month consistently.

I have one and it’s a fabulous reference.

I don’t think they discontinue it for another few years as it’s only been out since 2016.

For reference, The 116718LN anniversary green was rolled out in 2005 and discontinued in 2019, but market conditions were different then.

With that being said, you have to take into consideration, each AD only gets a few of these olives in a year (2-3) if they’re a large AD. Now, with the vast demand, it’s possible an AD might not be able to supply one for you by the time discontinuation rolls around.

I’d suggest speaking with a few ADs candidly and go from there.

No go on olive green but the watch is simply a firecracker of a timepiece. I’d say skip to due to ridiculous pricing and go for a choco dd in rose. It looks just as stunning as the green dial in person and it never disappoints.

I don't pay $59K for a watch I can buy for $39K. I much prefer that extra $20K remain with me. Simple as that.

No flippin' way would I pay what the greys want for that watch. They aren't discontinuing that dial anytime soon. That watch is expensive enough at retail.

This is going to turn into another MSRP only and don't support grey dealer debate. If the premium isn't a financial burden to you, then yes, but what you like because it is what you enjoy. I've owned it in the past and IMO is worth the premium for the dial, one of the most mesmerizing dials in the sun.

Based on uk observations, so not necessarily applicable to the us, it isn’t a particularly rare piece with plenty coming into circulation, unlike some sports references at a similar rrp. However, it’s currently being hyped to no end in the grey market with other pm DDs. Historically DDs haven’t been hard to acquire, so I would suggest it will always be possible to acquire one and if (a big if) the market softens, this may be precisely the kind of reference where it will start.

Having said all that, if you really want to own it and genuinely think you won’t have a chance of acquiring one through an AD, then the margin won’t seem like a big deal in a few years’ time of ownership.

If it's fair to the market value, you are in love with the watch and you have the funds, hell yes, i'd get it!
