Yachtmaster II... Legit?

My good friend got this watch the other day from a family member. I have some serious concerns about the dial. I know we are not supposed to mention specific items that look off, but I'm seeing at least 3. I can PM someone if that's allowed and let you know my concerns.

So, any experts out there that can give advice? Also, if as I suspect it's not legit, do I tell my buddy?

I'm no expert on this model so I hope I am wrong!!! UGH

Looks like a bad fugazi. I don't own a YMII but just off the top of my head

Missing triangle between 5 markers.
All the hands are wrong (color, size, form, length, etc..)
Crown looks squatty.

Etc... it just at a glance doesn't look right to begin with.

Well, I do know that the very first iteration didn't have the triangle and the sword hands were correct. My concern is #1 is the way that the minute markers on either side of the hour markets look. They are too close. #2, the track above the countdown 10-1 is so close to the underneath of the blocks. #3 the minute hand isn't long enough...

Noted on the triangle with the 116680 reference. To your point its just still off with the length of hands, size of font, and font/graving, all feel off. The bracelet also looks to be more narrow, but always difficult to reference in photos.

When in doubt, I'd like it to a local watchmaker, I'm sure they'll be able to quickly resolve any doubts one way or another.

More hobbyist than expert but I think a Google search is your friend with this one…
And I absolutely would tell my close friend it does not fit the bill and would expect the same as long as we are real friends…

The watch is junk, and I am sure your buddy already knows. Your choice if you want to call BS on his "story" or not.

Hmm... I don't know if he does or not. He's pretty proud of getting it. I haven't seen it in person yet, just the pics he sent. I've never had any interest in this model but right away from the pic he sent it looked way off to me. I have a sub and a couple dj so it's way out of my style.

If you want to be a bit more subtle...

The next time you see him with it, tell him you've never understood how the regatta timer works on those things, and ask him to show you.

The fact that it looks like cheap junk is the main concern.

Thanks everyone for the opinion and advice. Honestly, I don't know if he knows it's no good. He's not into watches. Game time decision when I see him next week about whether I will tell him.

Best thing - have a Rolex-oriented service tech open it to view the movement.

Really helpful! Thanks!

If somebody asks you for an honest assessment of their watch, that is one thing.

Bashing or deflating a friend for no other reason than "you know" is a completely different thing.

Side question... does the Yacht timer function work properly? I believe on the fakes this won't work as that complication is very odd. I wonder what is actually does do.

I imagine your friend knows his family well enough to know if whether they're more likely to gift him a $200 watch vs a nearer $18k watch....

If, by chance, he is from the kind of family that gift each other such extravagances as real Rolex, this watch might give him pause to consider those relationships.
