5167R vs 5712

I had just the opportunity to view and wear both models at a Patek AD (won’t disclose) and “maybe” will have the opportunity to purchase one. They are close in price but I think more bang for the buck for 5712. I do like the simplicity of the 5167R.

Which one do you all prefer? Curious on everyones thoughts.

Before you ask us, you should ask yourself which one will you wear more?

5712 not even a question. One of the best nautilus out there. But 5167R is beautiful too. I guess the question is do you already have an aquanaut or nautilus if answer is no 5712 1000% not even close in my eyes

This is a tough one for me, as an owner of a 5167A. I like the watch, have worn it much, but don't "love" it anymore. I much prefer more traditional, classic pieces these days, to sporty watches. That said, it is thin and light to wear, and arguably the most sought after Aquanaut. It's iconic.

On the other, you have a 5712. A Nautilus - another icon. If you were considering a 5711, I'd say get the Nautilus hands down. But with a moonphase complication, it's not straightforward to me. I just don't find that complication interesting, and it feels out of place without an annual or perpetual calendar to go with it. And keeping it set accurately will be a pain, I'd imagine - unless the watch is on a winder. (I don't keep mine on winders).

So to me, the decision would come down to gut - what would I enjoy the most? Considering all of the above, I'd probably go with the 5167A. But the 5712 might be more "prestigious", if that's your thing. It is a Nautilus after all. And if, unlike me, you like the moonphase complication - then go for it.

You really can't go wrong either way.

So these are my two watches and I love them both. For my lifestyle, I wear the 5167R more. It’s more legible and more comfortable in the rubber in the summer. But the 5712 is also special. Not nearly as legible but so light in the wrist. I would lean towards the 5167R but it’s close.

Edit - I missed that it was a 5167R you were considering. I'd go for that - the rose gold is amazing.

If it’s a 5712/1A, then that’s the route to go. If it’s 5712R vs 5167R, get the Aquanaut.
Nautilus has to be in bracelet, that’s part of the charm.

5712, 5164 gives it a good run for its money though.

Not a fan of 5167R and would much rather have 5167A but 5712/1A beats either by a mile. I will stay clear of any Nautilus on a strap though.

I totally agree. Who cares what we think- you want to wear a colored gold watch or a SS watch? A watch on bracelet or one on rubber ? This is the starting point IMO

I remember the first time I put on the 5711/1A, I was mesmerised by the blend of mirror finishing, satin brush and chamfering on the case and bracelet. It is a beautiful feeling when you put it on your wrist and spending time just staring at the whole package including the dial.

I do not see the Aquanuat case finished to the same degree and obviously it doesn't come with that stunning bracelet. Rose gold it might be but to me it is just another metal. At the end of the day it's your preference.

Thanks for the replies. I think it does matter what other people think since I value other peoples’ opinion and see a different perspective on the watch. It can actually sway decision which I think it has on this case. I was leaning towards the 5167R for simplicity but I think hearing everyones thoughts it made some sense that the 5712 is indeed a good watch for other reasons.

As a collector with 5711 gone, I’d be inclined to say 5712.

But atheistically, personally I’ve never like the dial of 5712, but loved aqua (very surprisingly to me). So if it were me, I’d go 67R, but not knowing anything about your tastes, I’d blindly go 5712.

Congrats in advance to the new piece!

I was in a similar situation last year, I had my eyes set on a 5167R, and went on this forum to ask for advice. The members suggested me to also look at 5712G and 5164A as well, as they were in a similar price range then (in grey). I ended up getting both instead of the 5167R, and haven't looked back since.

Absolutely love my 5164, it is the perfect watch for me. And my dad, usually a dress watch guy, is loving the 5712. As you have worn both, I am sure there is one that spoke to you more.

Of the two choices provided, I would prefer the 5712, but you cannot go wrong with a 5167r either.

if you don't have either, the 5712. If it was 5712 and 5164, 5164.

The Nautilus is the Og whilst the Aquanaut is the newer boy round the block. Go for the 5712 if you want more functionality, go for the 5167r for its simplicity. That being said I would definitely go for the 5712.

5712 all day every day.

If it was 5164r then maybe, only maybe.

5712. That said, I had the opportunity to buy a 5167R and passed on it, now I cannot get it. But I do love my 5712. You really cannot go wrong either way here.

5712 has more character for sure. But the 5167R with the rubber strap and heft of gold is a nice feeling which the 5712 lacks. But the Nautilus bracelet is like silk, absolutely amazing in that regard.

Enjoy the tough decision and sure you will be very happy with either.
