Normal practice???

Hi. I am awaiting a new Air-King via my local dealer. Prior to going away on holiday I could contacted the local authorised dealer to enquire what stock they had, and the possibility of purchasing a Rolex.
I received a reply a few weeks before going away that he had nothing at the moment it was getting stock of some watches, but didn’t know what yet, which was promising. On arrival at the store they had no stock, as in not even display models, none!! He said he’d be getting some stock in that week. As I was travelling to another part of the country I arranged to pop back before we flew home.
The dealer contacted me later in the week, and, to my surprise and excitement, he was getting a new Air-King. Here was the catch, he wanted double the retail price, and to be paid via bank transfer straight away?? Is this normal, and r even standard practice? Should I be wary of this? I have declined his number ver, and have heard nothing since from the dealer.

An Air King at double retail?

Pass on the price and the AD.

Not normal. Pass. I wonder if they're actually allowed to do that in the UK and if they would issue a receipt for the full amount.

Have to agree had quite a few of these type posts on forum lately, but find them hard to believe that any official Rolex AD would do this.

Says the OP lives in the UK, but not clear if that's where he's traveling now/where the dealer is. This would be very uncommon in the UK I should think, but other parts of the world it seems to be more accepted.

Also not entirely clear: Is this the dealer's last 116900 coming in or the first 126900?

No, not an April fool. And it should have finished that I’d declined his offer, not number.
The AD is based in Colombo Sri Lanka, and is an authorised dealer as I’d found the details on the Rolex website. Possibly l, due to the situation in the country, he is trying to make as much money as possible. Alarm bells rang a bit when I visited the store and they had not one Rolex on display.

I’d understand if if it was a private or grey seller.
Retail of £5900, but asking 12,900.00 US dollars is a bit much. If he’d asked for a bit more then fine, but there is a limit. As quoted earlier, would the receipt have had that higher amount on an official receipt?
And I know it would go up in value, but I’m not looking at selling it, it is the watch I want, not profit from!!

Welcome.

As a fellow CJ and person of means to afford a Rolex and the intelligence to sign up on a forum and use the internet, what does your gut instinct tell you about this encounter, irrespective of whatever ‘practice’ is? Would you buy anything from anyone representing a prime worldwide brand (assuming your dealer is an AD) when they ask for double the money on a common and available item, and via wire only?

There’s your answer.

Assuming this is sincere, are you sure it’s an AD and not a watch dealer/jewelry shop? I’ve had a couple of acquaintances not realize the difference so it’s a sincere question…

Yes this is absolutely normal for most who are not already customers of the AD. Everyone wants these watches, they are trying to satisfy their current good clients, why would they take away from a loyal customer to give to you? Well... only if they can make more money.

I agree that price it too high, so buy it second hand somewhere else and enjoy it

Chatham between the Cinnamon Grand and Shangri La ?
I used to go in there frequently, seemed like good people, but given the horrendous economic circumstances being suffered by the populace, nothing there is "normal"-
I would try and get at least double the price from a foreigner if I were them.....

edit to add- the country was awash with fakes brought in by the workers building Port City and the lotus tower, so if it's not Chatham, be diligent....
