DD40…best dial color!?

Okay, so I am new to the forum and my first post regarding this purchase got a pretty tepid response to say the least!

I am purchasing my first DD, probably WG, and am leaning towards the white dial for the versatility, but know the green dial will hold its value much better and in the right light, is stunning, and a classic special occasion Rolex color.

I am fortunate enough to own the Batman GMT (oyster bracelet), and the current generation of the YM rhodium dial, Daytona “panda”, and Starbucks Sub. I also have a Baume et Mercier TT Capeland on a cognac alligator strap.

My question is white dial or the olive green - I have not been able to see either in person. Or should I wait until next year and see if Rolex comes out with any new dials for the WG DD40?

If you are in Florida, check with David SW in Orlando. If he has what you want to see, take a drive.

Who cares if it holds value if it’s not your favourite/preferred dial color?

For example, I personally like the black bezel Subs. I wouldn’t purchase the green bezel over the black just because it’s more desirable or retains its value more

I only buy watches that I find attractive and enjoy wearing. That being said, I’ve worked hard to get to the point that I can afford these watches, so I don’t pay above retail EVER, and try to buy watches that will hold their value or appreciate. If I absolutely love a watch that won’t hold it’s value, I would still purchase it assuming it is not ridiculously priced.

Both the white and green DD40 are beautiful watches. While the white is very versatile, it lacks pizzazz. The green is stunning, but not sure I can wear it with everything.

Have to agree but today the net and so called social media dictates what colour dial, watch material, watch brand etc to buy. As many have lost the use of there own brain to choose what they would like to own and wear.

Of those two choices easily the olive in my opinion. Just a much more interesting dial combo and looks stunning with the white gold.

In my very humble opinion, you have to see them in person. Some look great in pictures but don’t do anything for me in person. YMMV

For that particular watch I’d choose olive over white…but…you need to see the olive in person, it’s a very subtle green. If I were you, I would not make my choice until seeing both in person.

As you will probably get tons of different answers since we all have our subjective tastes - my vote would be the olive on the white gold. I think it's classy and adds just a bit of color that would give you a smile every time you look at it.

No question, go with olive. It will go with more than you think… as in everything!! White is boring.

Olive, 100%. It's quite beautiful but subtle.

Yes it is limiting, but you do have other options with your collection.

If a one watch owner, then I'd say go white. Otherwise your collection opens up the option of something that isn't as flexible.

As others have said, try to see them in person if you can then choose.

Thank you for the feedback…I let my ADs know that I’m going with the green dial. Now it’s just a matter of waiting 3-6 months!!

How is this of any help to anyone? Isn't that what we're on the forums for - to talk watches and seek / provide our thoughts and opinions? Padi, I get that you've been around forever and some view you as holy but it gets pretty tiring to see you post the same negativity throughout all the threads when questions arise.

Back to the question at hand - in my opinion, for WG I'd go blue. It's a striking combination and gorgeous in person. 2nd choice would be olive.

i don't understand it either, sometimes you just can't decide between a few different things and need some help or different perspectives from others or owners. we've all been there, i've been there many times. not sure why that suddenly means you have no brain and can't think for yourself

I agree. I make much more significant or financially impactful decisions on a daily basis as I’m sure many of us do and I can certainly make this decision without any help, but sometimes getting different perspectives leads to a better outcome or will confirm your original thoughts.

The cars, watches, clothes, etc. that you buy should always be purchased to please you or your family, not impress others. The DD is a watch that represents success or achievements, not status or wealth.

I have no issue waiting…I passed on a black dial Daytona early on to wait a year for the “Panda”! That said, I lack a proper dress watch for a suit and tie. The DD40 will fill that gap, and the WG with the green dial will certainly do the job. I can always trade it in next year if Rolex comes out with a better dial for the WG, such as a slate or rhodium dial with Roman numerals!
