Gold
GOLD - the title is simple enough. I’ve come to a stage (and age maybe - 50) where I’d like to have a gold watch. It’s something I’ve deliberated on for maybe 10 years but a couple of things have always put me off. First of all the cost, secondly what to get. Maybe I’ve used these as excuses, I’m not sure, but I’d like to add gold in the next year or so . . . .
Cost - I’d be looking to sell two watches to put towards a gold watch, possibly three if needed. I’ve got close to enough money in watches as I’d ever really want to be honest, but I’d consider adding maybe 10k for the right watch. So depending on what I found, it would depend on what I sold if that makes sense. If the gold were to be a Rolex, I’d look to sell Rolex, if it’s an AP, I’d sell my AP etc. What to get - that’s the million dollar question as I really can’t decide. I think if I buy it will be rose gold or yellow gold. As much as I like white gold, I’d want a different look to my line up. Rolex - 116508 green dial yellow gold Daytona is the one Rolex I keep coming back to. I’m fairly sure that if it’s a Rolex, I’d want it on bracelet. AP - Royal Oak 41mm. Pink gold. 15500OR would be an option, pushing it even further the 26331OR pink gold chronograph. Cost wise for either I’d be looking at parting with three of my current line up. The chrono here would be my first choice if truth be told, but I’m not sure I’d ever be happy to commit to that much value in a single watch. PP - 5146, 5396, 5205. All watches I’ve thought about for some time. Various gold options too. Would a dress watch on leather be completion for me? Or would I be a bit disappointed? If I were to only sell Rolexes I’d have the trinity! Do nothing - is gold is over hyped and over priced? Steel is the way forward? Other brands - any other suggestions? I realise that I’ve posted this on the Rolex forum so replies could be biased, but I’d hope that there’s some impartiality here. I also realise that I’ve got an amazing collection and I’m lucky to have acquired what I’ve got. Chances are in a years time I’ll still be ‘thinking’ about it. Here’s what I’ve got . . . . . |

Imho you've waited 20 years too long. LOL - I've been rocking gold since I was 30 and its all the hype now with all the young successful lads.
In saying that and looking at your collection I'm still a true believer your first gold Rolex should be the one and only Rolex Presidential. The one to own now is the YG DD40 in any dial color you want and ALWAYS ALWAYS on bracelet. Trust me on that. If your looking at Rose Gold I suggest you go see one in person and look at it in different lighting. Rolex RG is much much more copperish in color than AP/Patek whos Rose gold is closer to Rolex YG. Here is a picture to show you the difference in gold |

You'd need to sell a few watches to get an AP/Patek in Gold - I guess depending on the model. You could get away with just selling 2 for a Rolex PM.
I'd stay in the "family" and get a YG/RG DD, doesn't get more classic than that. Even if I do LOVE the pink gold colour of AP. I'd wait a few months for next year to see if Rolex doesn't release this guy: |

I bought the 50th anniversary gold Speedmaster last year. It definitely scratched the gold itch and was a birth year watch for me too. A gold complicated Patek is the end game for me at some point in the next few years.

Sounds like any watch is a contender providing it's gold. If you want the gold more than the watch, it looks like you've picked a really bad time to pour money into this pit.
Probably best to try some contenders on. If you find one that you don't want to take pff and can't stop thinking about once you've met it, you've found your next watch. You can then plan accordingly. I've got half an eye on my first gold watch. Like you I will sell a couple and add funds - if I ever start getting serious. Cogitating can be stimulating until the impulse kicks in. I'm trying to stay in the cogitation zone for now. Particularly in the present PM climate. |

Any DD would do just fine. There is something special about the DD on a President. Can’t describe it properly.
It’s solid as any Rolex for a worry free use. Dresses up or down, goes well with every attire. It’s not gold that’s overrated but the SS hyped watches

Since you already have an AP and a VC, a Patek would complete the set nicely. If you get one on a leather strap, the weight won't be much different than you steel watches.

Wow, you got a great collection already, but I agree that you should add some gold timepiece in your collection too.
If you want to go with Rolex, Rose Gold D-D with Olive dial would be perfect or YG Daytona with green dial (it will be a long wait). If you want AP 15500OR with full rose gold bracelet, I am sure you will love it so much, AP bracelet is the best but you already has 15500ST in your collection. I think it might be better to go for 26331OR instead or trade your 15500ST to 15500OR. For PP, I like 5396R with blue dial the most, it's dress watch with leather strap. Or you can go with nautilus 5711/1R with full rose gold bracelet, that is one of the most sought after. For all the gold timepieces, Rolex is the most reasonable in price but it is good to have various luxury brands in your collection. I also plan to expand my collection to various brands in the future.

Looks to me as though you bought that collection last week. Maybe consider taking some time out to enjoy what you have before you spend a significant amount of money on a PM watch........but if you are a chap in a hurry then I would take the advice from a previous post and aim to try on a few watches before you commit.

If it’s your first, I’d suggest going full gold including bracelet, it’s the better ‘first time’ all gold experience..IMO. Also, you’ve got the professional watches covered nicely, If you’re going full gold bracelet, the DD40 is hard to beat! It would compliment you collection very well, and very versatile vs many gold with strap watches. If your lifestyle is more active/sporty, etc...the YG sub or gmt with ceramic is always a great choice. My personal choice is YG over RG...a little to do with my skin tone and I know RG has been around a long time, but for me, it still ‘feels’ trendy. Although I like the AP and PP rose gold on strap, I’m just not a full RG with bracelet fan.
Good luck! |

Wow! Hard to believe I did not write the original post. This was me 20 years ago. Everything I owned HAD to be white. Nothing yellow. Wedding band in Platinum and only Stainless Steel Rolexes. Anything yellow was for me vulgar, flashy and with no class whatsoever (no offense obviously to anybody). Then you age...
Now turning 50, a few days ago I bought a 116618LN and I cannot be happier. I looked and tried on the DD, which I love, but being a big guy at 6'5" it looks really tiny on me. I chose the LN because if I loved some color with the stainless steel watches, I still think the LB with the Yellow Gold is way too flashy for my personality, again no offense. I love everything about it. The presence, the different colors in different lights, the weight. I suggest you go for it now. Good luck and I hope my experience helps, since it's very similar.....

Awesome collection! I’d go with a PP, an annual calendar for example such as the 5205, a gorgeous reference!

I agree with those who have said to go full gold if this is your first. I think the PP 5396 will feel more like a dress watch than a “gold” watch. I also used to think that YG is too flashy, but that was only until I tried it on. It’s still not something I’d wear to the office, but it’s a perfect for the weekends.

OP, you've got a superb collection.
I'm in a similar state of mind. I want gold. I could trade in three steel pieces tomorrow (116622, 126600, 126613lb) and get the full gold watch I really want, the 126618lb. Two problems, I love these steel watches and full gold comes with its drawbacks. I think I would regret it. So, I'm going to stay put for a while, enjoy my humble collection and reassess later, perhaps when I turn 50 like OP. |

I have owned them all in the Rolex line-up in PM and currently have a YG Sky-Dweller and a YG Submariner, 116618LB. After going round and round with various PM's I can tell you that it is not worth it to me to have more than one and even then it has to be personal preference. I will be moving the Submariner soon. I can say that because I have been there and done that. I also can, within reason, buy/sell/trade for any Rolex PM I want so no real desire there. I have a friend that was deep in the PM's and a few years ago he sold/traded out and he only wears SS sport models now from Rolex, PP and AP. Took the rest of his money and bought a new Porsche. Loving life and if you talk to him he is much happier with what he describes a more wearable watches. Sometimes we just have to experience some things for ourselves to see if it works. I would not dismantle an impressive collection to go PM. I would sit tight, try some watches on and just see, if a few months down the road, you still have the urge to do it. If so, ok, if not then enjoy what you have.

Looking at your current collection it seems you have little use for a dressier piece like the DD (yes I know it can be dressed down). In any case I'd say get a Rolex professional/sports. I.e. the gold Sub or GMT. Not too polite, not too loud, and I love the way they feel on the wrist. FWIW also gonna be easier to wear on the regular than a gold RO.. which would be my 2nd vote if you have the cojones
Sorry I'm of no help on what to get rid of. You have a very cool collection. Perhaps the sd43 That VC is a cool piece |

Definitely do it and you won’t regret it. YG or RG day date. You have some nice pieces in your collection. Take advantage of the ridiculous market now, especially if you bought by hem at MSRP.

Bought my first YG DD when I was 35, before the hype. Loved it. Added the YM everose on OF and love that too. Once you go gold, or PM, it’s hard to go back to SS except for maybe daily wear, if that’s your thing.

I would also note you can get into a full gold Rolex for much less than a full gold AP, or PP. Its not really apples to apples there.
