Water resistance - why is it so hard
I was watching the Apple Watch Ultra review today (I know, I know) and saw that it had a rating of 100m, even though it has multiple microphones / speakers / buttons / turning wheels.
I was curious, why is it so hard (or is it not and just gets neglected) to make APs a BIT more water resistant? AKA let's say why cant most regular watches (RO/ROO/ROC, I understand the QP issue) not be at least 100m water resistant? I'd love to be able to not take it off when taking a jump into the pool and swim a few laps? All of them now have screw-down crowns and it doesnt seem to be an issue for Rolex / Tudor etc either, so there's no real technology preventing them from doing so, amiright? |

Most Apple watches aren't even water-fountain resistant.

My guess is that a high failure rate on a watch that costs $10 to produce isn't a concern to the manufacturer.
Add that to the circa 1 year time in service (got to upgrade every year.......can't be seen to be "last year" at the coffee shop) Lastly, anyone "smart" enough to use an Apple watch as a dive computer at any depth, let alone 100m, won't be making any warranty claims. Just my take. They are disposable technology after all. I'm sure Apple have factored this all in to their business plan. |

Seems to me that they could make the RO 100M like the Offshore, but would have to switch to SS screws. The white gold threads are too soft to be properly tensioned.

All the 50m ROs are swimmable as confirmed by AP, just don’t go snorkelling or deeper.

As long as my RO is waterproof for her weekly bathing and cleaning, I am ok with that. I consider a sub or blancpain a much better option for swimming and not caring about ingress water in the watch.
I always use the design purpose of the said watch when considering it's use. The SUB and Blancpain was from day 1 a tool and a dive watch, the RO never. |

to be honest, a modern apple watch is magnificent. water resistant, tracks your workout pace, your heart rate, your elevation and can call for help after you elder parents fall or get in an accident.
Yes, they are disposable after a few years. I still have the series 3 from 5 years ago and i use it only for workouts. A Rolex may make money for you, but an apple watch might save your life. (a rolex may cost you your life...) |

Because Apple has far more money and effort into designing their products.
