Bummer - scuff on Batman

So I've worn this watch maybe 5 times in the last 6 months, and I look down today to see a good size scuff on the right side of the case (see pic).

Would any high end jeweler be able to buff that out, and would it affect resale since it's been "polished"?

Also, how the hell does this happen when the roughest thing I do during the workday is type aggressively.....

Sorry to hear. I would myself leave until service. From my experience those type of marks on the side of the case are typically (for a righty at least) caused by shirt and/or jacket buttons, zippers etc. Sometimes even bought material like a Carhartt jacket can do that to the finish surprisingly enough.

Did you actually expect the polished steel to be scuff free forever? You can get it polished but it’ll happen again and again - unless you don’t wear it at all

If you wear them scratches and scuffs will come - I have worn my LVc as my daily for five years now - try not to look at the various bits of ‘life’ on it too closely plus my fading eyesight helps - appreciate we are all different and if that bothers you to a big degree you can get it polished out

Something as simple as a shirt sleeve can scratch it if small dirt particles that are hard (e.g. silica sand) get sandwiched between the shirt and the watch or if a cloth that is dirty is used to wipe it down. This is just a byproduct of wearing something that has polished stainless. Stainless gets scuffed and scratched.

The best solution might be to wear it more often so you get more scratches?

That looks suspiciously like the type of abrasion caused by constantly putting the watch on its side on a surface. Even wood will cause those swirls if always placed on its side.

Either way, I wouldn’t worry about it. If it bothers you it’ll be removed at service time, at which point if you wear it there’ll be more…

Only way to prevent that is to not wear the watch. If you died tomorrow, would you regret having scuffs on your watch or having spent ~10k for a watch that you either didn’t wear or that caused you stress to wear?

Great. It is basically worthless now. You could leave it on the side of the road and hope someone picks it up. I could take it off your hands, but only if you pay for shipping.

I would totally leave it alone. Scratches, dings, marks. All normal wearing a watch. I definitely would not polish it or have it serviced. Just enjoy the watch. When (and if) the time comes and you wish to sell, I honestly don’t even think it would affect the value.

They are built to be enjoyed. Gouges and dings caused by carelessness would bug me but the fine scuffs and scratches caused by wear are normal. It’s why a polish is part of the standard service.

These things tend to wear you for the first little while till they get a few marks and then you start wearing them… The first mark you notice is always the toughest. After that it collects a few more and it just becomes your watch. It’s actually sort of liberating. When they’re new it’s easy to obsess or agonize about it and it robs some of the joy.

Even potential dings caused by carelessness, while annoying, shouldn’t stop you from wearing your watch. I think for all of the dings on my watches I have no idea where I picked them up. I find being hyper focused on “wrist awareness” to be a chore and even the most serious of dings can be fixed with laser welding. As you said, don’t let the watch wear you.

As others have said however, its inevitable and likely will get other marks as time goes on. Might be wise just to leave it and whenever it goes in for service, have Rolex do it.

Here’s a scuff I got the other after I wore my sub 41 date at the beach and in the water. Happened when I dove into a 12 foot wave, albeit a little too late because it sucked me back in and tumbled me around a bit. I was ok (pretty fun actually). I leaned on my wrist and could feel the watch making contact with sand on ocean floor.

Did I care? I thought I would, but, to my own surprise, I didn’t. Why? Because it was one FUN afternoon with friends and family, and I will look at that scuff for years to come with a smile on my face as a reminder of the great time we had that day.

Point being, enjoy the watch, whether it’s your only one or one in a collection of many.

Of course the scuffs affect resale value.

If you plan to wear and enjoy the watch, the scuffs should not affect you.

The small mark is nothing, btw. Literally a nothing mark.
