I would’ve had a hard time not saying something to the poor, or should I say rich, guy. I’d expect a little markup vs the online sellers, especially vs forum sellers, but dang—that’s some sort of premium.

What were the prices like on the other models you looked at?

Are you sure that was 116500LN, not one of WG Daytona?

Exactly. Wealthy or not, this guy was absolutely rinsed, but if he's happy flushing several thousand down the toilet, then that's his prerogative.

(OP - did you catch his number by any chance? I have some snake oil I want to shift. Only $100,000 a gallon to him. )

Hey y’all, to answer a few questions posed:

- there was definitely nothing else purchased with the watch.

- it was not a WG version.

- the vintage pieces did seem a bit pricy as well.

- the store was very nice and enjoyable. An easy place to get impulsive.

Personally, I was torn between “more power to him for buying what he wanted when he wanted it” and “how does someone buy a Daytona without at least doing a google search for other dealer options.”

The situation was an eye opener for me to watch consumer behavior that I previously hadn’t observed.

How is it different than buying an extra 50k of jewelry to get a 10k entry-level SS sports watch? Several people have posted those stories and still get the cold shoulder from the AD ("friend-zoned".)

Ha, this +1.

OP, you had me at Nantucket! Owner probably owes you a commission to help seal the deal with social profing!

To your last question, I think some people are fortunate enough where time value of money means it literally is not worth the cost of time to bend over and pick up a dollar off the ground. It mathematically does not make sense to spend time to research price. Amazingly at some point it’s not even irrational but perfectly rational.

I think most are underestimating the relativity of age, wealth and convenience. There is a large group of people that don't go on the internet and just want things to be easy.

That just wasn't smart. Yeah, easy for me to say, but still.

I'm also kinda pissed as this is the reason why prices don't fall down as much or as quickly as they really should.

Dang. Even if I could swing burning cash like that for no reason, no way would I allow myself to do it. Still, props to him, and I hope he really likes it.

Price to be paid for bragging rights which is really what the modern Daytona has become is it not? Basically like a members only jacket for the top 1 percent these days.

a members only jacket is worth way more than a jacket without the access to the membership. Anyone can order themselves a green jacket, but one from Augusta National is a different thing altogether.

And this why the average folks can not walk into Rolex AD and buy at retail/MSRP...

These clowns can spend all the money they have for a mass produced Rolex watch.

Basically what we have here is a guy who dropped $47,000 for a $14,000 watch. He knows he overpaid. We know he overpaid. The difference is that he thinks he's tripping over his own d!c%, but we see he's tripping over his own feet. Just a matter of perspective.

Pretty sure I know this shop and it's very nice. Cool atmosphere and lots of cool watches. As others have mentioned, this is on the island of Nantucket where there is lots of wealth...like generational wealth. So heavily assuming here but the buyer could be a regular customer and likes buying from a shop/owner he's comfortable with and is extremely wealthy where ~$15K (difference between current market prices and what he paid) is a non-issue?

I’m reminded of a story when I was young.

Joseph goes to the store to buy a new TV for his family. There’s a lot of amazing TV’s, but he wants the one that’s hard to get. The dealer explains that he can get what he wants, but it’s 3x the price. Joseph pays it.

Joseph is a schmuck.

Questions?
