There is some serious money in Nantucket, generational wealth or otherwise. $15K is most likely chump change to this guy. No need to feel sorry for him. I think he's going to be just fine.

Was it a young person or older person?

Just because one is wealthy doesn't mean they go around paying ridiculous prices for things. Many serious collectors who happen to be wealthy are extremely savvy and drive very hard bargains.

I'm guessing this was just a casual rich guy who wasn't really into watches.

Lets face it, they got it for the instasnaps. The fellow will scuff it taking said instasnaps, and then post here on the Rolex Forums about if they should laser weld it, send it for a service, or if it can be buffed out.

ACK is home to many billionaires.
Probably the densest area of wealth in USA.
It’s a meaningless sum.

I also find many dealers that specialize in vintage gouge on prices.

I get that they have overhead but the profits tend to be multiple the market value or what they can be had in places like Moda.

Today I witnessed a black 116500 sell for $47k

A real Baller would have marched into an AD and bought his wife $200k of jewelry she didn’t want … put himself on the waitlist for the Daytona … waited 1 year … picked up the watch … then started a thread on TRF saying his AD came through big time … that he has a great relationship with his AD … that he would never pay a penny over MRSP … and that people who do so are idiots.

It only hurts for a few minutes and then there is the rush of the new piece on your wrist, awesome...

And my 9000th post, with one or two exceptions, I've enjoyed my time here since 2009.

Big money is so huge these days, it’s beyond anyones comprehension
I play golf occasionally with a guy who sends his private jet to Miami from La Romana DR just for American produced food/beverages, cigarettes and vet appointments for his dogs.

Some billionaires give millions to charities, what’s an extra $15k for a watch?

But to the very wealthy, isn’t there some sense of principle? Paying $45,000 for a watch that’s worth 15,000. And you can buy on the gray market for 35,000.

A lot of the rich people I know are actually somewhat frugal and/or mindful of money and also would never pay way way above actual cash value for anything.

I would like to think that if I was a multimillionaire, I would not squander my money or like to be taken advantage of.

The funny thing is the really rich people get the watches at MSRP since they are usually VIPS at their ADs. It's only the unwashed middles that have to pay markups to the greys.

Lol, the awful truth.

The buyers getting squeezed out of ADs are the middle class indeed.

The class that still has to worry about bills and mortgages. Very unwashed indeed.

The really rich are the ones ordering the Rainbow Daytonas and emerald baguette Patek Nautiluses and then selling them at a loss when they want to declutter.

But then again many of these very wealthy people are also quite vulnerable to huge amounts of debt if some kind of business deal or divorce goes south.

What a seemingly impulse purchase. Seems like that was a thoroughly non researched purchase

Most rich folks get to a point where they realize time is more valuable than money. So they spend their money to save time, which is reasonable and smart when you can afford it. Sounds like that is what this guy did.

Not really any different than paying for VIP access to an event to avoid waiting in lines, or a myriad of other things folks pay for to avoid waiting.

The only real difference here is it is on a more expensive "scale", which is relative to the individual.

What's the point of having money if you don't spend it for enjoyment?
