Is the sub boring or perfect?
I was recently in Paris and found myself, as usual, watch spotting. In restaurants over the few days, I counted approx. 10-12 subs (may have been some seadwellers as I wasn't close enough to see), one batman, one pepsi and one AP but didn't see which one.
It got me thinking. Is the sub so popular because of it's versatility or is it so common now that it's become a little dull vs other references? For context I was wearing an SD43. I appreciate it shouldn't matter what other people wear but it just seemed a little "samey". |

It’s a completely awesome watch with undeniably respectable history. But it doesn’t excite me, and if you’re judging a watch by how commonplace it is, I think you’d have to say it’s rather boring. I’ve owned a few and would buy another if I were a “collector,” but as a one-watch guy, I don’t think a Sub could do it for me. I’ve tried and I always grow tired of it.
It’s sort of the Tom Hanks of watches. More than adequate, less than amazing; justifiably acclaimed, but rather ubiquitous, and so even though it’s a “classic” and “essential,” it doesn’t work as the end-in-itself. My opinion, anyway. The watch certainly has its share of devotees who will disagree. |

Si. Another way to see a Tom Hanks performance: boringly perfect.

Perfect but has been around for so long and copied by so many that some people are bored of it.

Boring here is relative to an individual. For me it’s tested and trusted which is why it’s still available despite the test of time and of course sorted after.

My first Rolex was a DD, followed by a YM and a GMT.
The Submariner date was my 4th choice. Sure I like my 116619LB but it does not give me the same wow feeling as i.e. my latest GMT CHNR. Luckily it has polished center links to brighten it up a little. I just prefer the more visually pleasing watches. Not much which can beat the ballet of light from a fluted bezel.

Tom Hanks as a Submariner is so perfect. Agree with the comments above. Perhaps it's the longevity and the fact it's so copied by other brands that means other models stand out to me when I see them.

It is close to perfection but sometimes boring, yes.
Also the people having one generally look like strive for attention which I don’t want to be associated with, at least where I live they look like that type. Wanted so bad the no date sub, I have one but mainly sits in the drawer now with other watches taken the prime line on the wrist. It’s nice very well balanced and best bracelet in the businesses, still after lusting so long for one after getting one I don’t find it the supreme one watch, glad I have it but that’s it. |

It is certainly the Rolex i have seen most in person and it does seem like I see 5 or so black subs in the wild for every other Rolex. Still a classic, of course, though if you have the wrist for it, SD43 is a better option I think.

It's an icon. The more people bored by it, the shorter the waiting lists. So that's a bonus.

Part of the reason I preferred my Seadweller 16600 all those years ago was to have a watch slightly different to the Submariner. I couldn’t resist though and I have since bought a Submariner 124060. I have to say I absolutely love the simplicity of it. Extremely easy to wear watch.

I think it’s a combination of both to be honest :)
I bought many watches before I bought a (SS) sub. Always thought they were boring and just bought one because it was a good deal and I am of course a Rolex collecter. It really is the perfect watch. I however don’t wear it at all anymore over my gold versions, because I prefer the SD43 that again was bought as a rotation watch but is the perfect differentiation to me from the submariner, I’ve worn it more than any other watch. |

Perfect - just not as exciting as it could be. That is why I traded my 124060 in for the LV, amazing watch.

Needs a coloured bezel. Dark blue would look good in keeping with the sea theme and not too flash for a tool watch.

It's an iconic classic. if the Sub can be compared to Tom Hanks the actor, then perhaps it can be the Porsche 911 of watches. Are there more exotic watches/cars? Sure, but it's iconic, has withstood the test of time and readily recognizable.
All that being said, personal tastes being what they are, I couldn't go with just a black sub so went with what they term the "badass" sub, (SD43) and the colorful Sub (Bluesey). If the Sub had a blue bezel in SS instead of white gold, I'd be all over it. |

If the 10-12 subs you saw, how many had the date?
