Is the sub boring or perfect?

It’s so boring? Yet when you have one on the wrist you can’t stop looking at it. It’s a true piece of art. Simple and perfect in my opinion. Same as a Porsche 911.

Boring is a strong word. The black Sub is a fantastic watch, but it's just that it never felt that special to me personally when I was in the market for a diver.

So, I went for other pieces like the YM, SD43 and TT blue Sub instead. Now I feel like I'm not 100% against the idea of adding a ND, but I'm just missing that wow factor, if that makes sense.

It is an essential watch for ANY collection. As close to the perfect watch as you can get when you combine history, beauty, function, and collectibility.

It is the flagship of the Rolex brand, like it or not.

I think im on the fence.. I bought a seiko SLA043J1 not long ago and if i compare it now to my sub i say - i like the seiko more.. The sub is more boring but it it maybe just a ''phase''
Sometimes i want to sell the sub as i don't like te people that wear one, and subs are absolutely everywhere in my city........

Uhhh, no, it’s not “essential for ANY collection.” I’ve been collecting for nearly 20 years, focused exclusively on tool watches, especially divers. I really can’t think of a watch I want less than a black sub.

To me, the sub has become too commonplace, too copied, too “status” oriented. It’s a fashion watch at this point. No? Rolex has not one, but two, technically superior divers in the lineup. They’ve had one superior diver in the lineup for 50 years.

Design wise, it’s overly glossy and bloated. History wise, yes, it’s an icon, but what history is there really? First diver, no. First “modern” diver, no. Technical firsts in the watch, not really other than the triplock. In fact, from a historical perspective it’s biggest claim to fame is James Bond. Yuk.

I’m being overly harsh, but the notion that the Sub is the be all, end all of divers is absurd. Great and iconic, yes. Perfect or a “must,” nope.

Sea Dweller 43…better tool watch history, better case lines, better bracelet, better dial, better technically. Also less ubiquitous. Way less likely to find your newly promoted coworker sitting next to you with it on her wrist.

All goes back to perspective - ever since college years I've longed for one; the connection back to 007, the classy color combo of stainless steel/black, its recognizability, the history as a tool watch, etc.

To me, it seems like the perfect one watch to have. However, to those more veteran to watches, I'm sure it lost its magic long time ago and now they're onto something else. It's like those who have/had the AP, Patek, Daytonas, etc. They move onto vintage watches or more niche products.

boring?....funny how one person calls the sub that and everyone has to make comments Funny thing, you see more of them everywhere and everyone talks about the sub more than any other Rolex because it the the Best of the Best! Sub owners (Well me!) dont have to brag, others do that for us whether it's negative or positive, When people say Rolex they think Submariner date or not. Its the other Rolexes that are not the Sub that have to show off, brag and complain about the sub.

I'm leaning towards the "perfect" side of the spectrum.

I appreciate watches from the low end to the highest end, both classic and outlandish, and the more I have, the more I find myself being drawn to the sub - it's simplicity, design, no-fuss neutrality. Just put it on and go about your day feeling good about what's on your wrist.

To me it's an undeniable example of something so special, no matter how common.

It is interesting that you ask this question.

For some reason I have never liked the Sub. For me, yes, it is one of the most boring, uninteresting wristwatches I have ever seen. Black and silver like countless others. The speedy "moonwatch" is in the same category.

There are SO many other options available. Besides "history," why choose these two?

I think I am right in saying the most influential mens fashion designer ever, Massimo Osti, had two Sea-Dwellers but no Submariners in his collection. I don’t know if that was a conscious style choice or if it was just the way it worked out.
