Trade proposal

I just recently got the call for an AP 15550 white dial.
A friend of mine offered to trade his black dial daytona and add 10k to the trade.

I just wanted to see people's thoughts on this trade. Would you do it? I have the white dial daytona but it is being used more by my wife so the black daytona is something i'd like to add. I'm 50/50 on this trade there's pros and cons to both.

Put $10k in your pocket and a black Rolex on your wrist.

Yes, I would do it in a heartbeat! However, just to be upfront, my opinion is very biased as the AP does nothing for me. I would enjoy wearing the Daytona much much more than the AP.

I'd actually just have him pay the cost of the watch and an option fee to you rather than take the Daytona.

Also don't forget once the watch gets re-registered (by either your friend or someone down the line), AP will likely cut you off.

To be honest the AP feels flimsy when you wear it. It's light, no micro adjustment and a scratch magnet. So after being on a high getting the call, the excitement faded pretty quick.

My friend would have to reregister for that to happen. I can just tell him to hold off for a year or so.

Not sure…..
2 Daytonas in 1 collection vs 1 Daytona and 1 AP

I think I would do the AP since I am waiting on 1 myself and I have the white Daytona.

Good luck with your decision

Ask in the AP forum and you'll get a very different sentiment....

MSRP to MSRP you have a fair trade (BUT : I assume your friends watch is worn, so a bit skewed in his favor)

2nd market to 2nd market I think you may take a bit of a dive... but at this point no one knows how far pricess will fall

That said, your trade equation should be : Daytona + 10k - opportunity to ever get another AP from the boutique = 15550...

If that's worth it to you, that's for you to decide. For me it wouldnt be, especially seeing how the market prices on the 2nd hand market are dropping... More than likely you can pick up a black one for 24k in 2 months (if you decide you need another Daytona)

AP 15550ST cost about $25300+tax = $27500, but secondary market probably close to $40000.

His black dial Daytona probably worth about $27000 it depends on the condition +$10000 cash from him = $37000.

I think it's fair. It depends which one you prefer to have it on your wrist, for me it's better to have both brands.

Ask in the AP forum. Likely the answers will differ.

Yeah, this is basically the hesitation. I could also put in for an AP Chrono to get an AP in the collection.

I would recalculate based on retail and re-evaluate.

It's so much harder to gauge the price of the AP in the grey market. I see 42-50k mostly. The daytona is much easier to see. Around 27-28k for it. I think I won't be able to get another AP if the watch gets reregisterd to the new owner. Otherwise, how would they know.

Fairish trade but i’d rather have the white dial daytona and ap. Vs 2 ss daytonas. I have the exact pair and enjoy the variety

thanks for the info. It's harder to find how much the AP is grey market vs the daytona. I think i'd use 40k as reference now. true, it's harder to let go of the AP since it's the only AP i have.

I'd keep the AP for variety. What was the wait time on the AP? Did you have to buy other watches to get offered the 15500? All that criteria need to be considered.

a steel AP isn't light, it's definitely heavier than a steel rolex (or at least to me for sure feels like it). it's more delicate but i wouldn't say it's flimsy. it's a sturdy watch but it's very blingy so it gives you the impression that it's flimsy. i have maybe 1 visible scratch on mine after almost 3 years of wearing it regularly, probably can't even find any others under lighting. it's only a scratch magnet if you read the exaggerations posted by people who don't own one. my two tone rolex looked like it had months of wear after the first day yet my AP still looks brand new so i'd say a rolex with PCLs is the biggest scratch magnet

with all that said it looks like it's not doing it for you so go for the daytona and cash. maybe sleep on it and give it a week or so since it won't hurt you

I disagree the AP is a scratch magnet. Mine is perfect after almost 2 years. The PCLs on my Daytonas show much more wear.

Unless you’ve owned an AP and don’t appreciate the design then take a look at the watch closely when you receive it. You might just fall in love with it. Daytona is my favorite Rolex but the AP is also very special.

Did the 15550 fit well on you? Value-wise, it sounds like a fair trade.

I’d keep 1 AP and 1 Daytona rather than 2 Daytonas.

I’m surprised you found the RO flimsy and light.
I thought it was well built and well balanced across the wrist.

Can’t forgive AP for the blank dial on the 15500 and white dial does nothing for me. AP more of a special watch for sure, but get what you like
