Dad was looking at buying the Sub Date in 1990. Instead he put the $2250 into the S&P 500. He would have enjoyed looking at that watch for all these years, but that $2250 is worth $38,800 today and he really enjoys looking at the amount in his bank account.

So in ~30 years, a Day-Date has gone from its $12,250 MSRP in 1990 to ... roughly $12,250 today! (Presumably there was at least a small dip sometime between then and now.)

I bought a 1991 day-date 18238 in 2017, paid £8495 with a full rolex service, 2 year warranty (got a good part ex price for my old watch to)
In 1991 the retail price was $13,750, with an average exchange rate in 1991 of 1.76, the stirlling price would have been £7812.50............So price has hardly moved in 28 years, even tho the gold price has moved from $350 to $1500 |

You should compare housing prices for NYC in 1990 to 2019.
