Daytona at London Heathrow

Hi all, passing through and acquired this from T5.
Ok not the stainless steal, but given tax fee etc not far off the price of the steel on grey market.

Nice! How difficult is it to find a PM daytona or GMT in London?

Lovely and congrats!

Out of interest (and if you don’t mind sharing!), how much did you save in tax?

In Heathrow it Used to be easy, always had PM pieces in stock. Talking 18 months ago. These days PM sports is usually not there, only the RG YM on rubber (always in stock every time). 2 years / 18 months ago they used to have gold sub / GMT, daytona, smerf WG, etc, always. These days it’s pretty baron and only DD and DJs available throughout. But as the OP has shown, you can get lucky. It’s very rare though. I go through Heathrow every month, all the different terminals depending on where I am going.

Last summer I picked up a BLNR in T3, they also had a black ceramic daytona in stock. This however was a fluke, only 2 BLNR per year and 1 Daytona in 3 years. So don’t ever expect this again. T2 told me they had 3 hulks in 2018.

Always ask. But then so does everyone else, every 5 minutes. Be specific when you ask though or they’ll suspect a flipper and won’t serve you

VAT is 20% in the Uk.. so 20% off MSRP.
Decent discount !

Provided you don’t get stung on customs on the way back

(Or in the country ur going to if you reside there)

Funnily enough I called up on Friday to say I’ll be passing through Monday. They had this reserved for somebody who passed in the end , so they called me on the Saturday to ask if I wanted it.

Agree there used to be loads of PMs at Heathrow. Really none other than Date Justs available now.

They have now also changed allocation policy and implement a similar one to boutiques- ie you have to have a purchase history to bag a stainless steel sport etc. rather than being there at the right time.

Congtrats! That 116509-0071 is my favorite Daytona. In fact, I've got a deposit on one with an AD right now.

Why would you get stung on the way back? I thought the point was you made a saving on any item purchased.

Technically VAT free is for someone leaving the UK.... e.g. a US resident citizen

So then if you return to the UK (e.g. a UK resident), the item should be declared and duty paid....

That's how I understand it anyway. Of course, what happens in real life could be entirely different

OP, congrats on a lovely watch!

It’s not a saving. It’s duty free because you’re air side

You bring it back, no duty has been paid, it’s technically owed. If UK customs opened your case on your way back in and found a Rolex box with papers that you bought in duty free in Heathrow, they 100% will ask you for the VAT or confiscate the watch

On a watch like that daytona I guess that will be £5000 immediate payment owed.

A dangerous situation to be ignorant of.

You’d be best placed to ditch the box and papers and not get caught with them on your person during re entry to the uk.. your risk otherwise

Absolutely superb!

Very smart decision going with full precious metal which comes with a special dial instead of paying absurd prices for a stainless steel white or black dial Daytona! Congratulations and wear it in good health.
